Free Music Notes for Gypsy - A Musical Fable (1959 Original Broadway Cast)

Free Music Review: Amazing to Discover
Hit: 5 Stars

Of course I have always known of Ethel Merman and the general style of her singing, but I had never actually sat and listened closely to her until I bought this CD reissue of Gypsy. What an amazing talent she was. Her voice, though often impersonated for kitsch, was a remarkable instrument--that high belt was always clear, always focused on pitch and rhythmically precise (at least on Gypsy). This is a truly absorbing score to listen to, and the remaster has been done wonderfully well, with great taste and attention to detail.

Free Music Review: Let This Entertain You
Hit: 5 Stars

Without a doubt this is one of the best scores ever written. The music, the lyrics, its almost overwhelming. The performances are just an added bonus. I can honestly say that I love every song on this CD (ecxept for the bonus tracks but those are usually only worth their curiosity value anaway). Not only is every song good, every song is a classic. Most "best of" CDs don't have this many classic songs. This deserves a place in any theater fan's library, no matter how minimal the interest may be.

Free Music Review: 10 STARS
Hit: 5 Stars

Many of the other versions are just fantastic (Bette in particular) but let's face it, Merman rules. This is the ultimate broadway-feeling original cast album. I tend to prefer original cast albums, because of their authenticity.
Nice tidbit: did you know that it's Sondheim himself who says "you ain't gettin'88 cents from me, Rose" ? the actor who spoke that didn't show up the day they recorded this, so he stepped in.

Free Music Review: One of the Best
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this CD a few months ago and have been listening to it steadily ever since. This is truly one of the best Broadway recordings ever. Each time I listen to it I discover more shadings and more layers to it. When Sandra Church sings "Let Me Entertain You" and Merman sings "Rose's Turn", the vulnerablility and strength of those two women shines through.

Free Music Review: WONDERFUL GYPSY
Hit: 5 Stars

I WOULD SUMMARIZE THIS REVIEW AS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. WHEN COMPARED TO ANY OTHER RECORDING OF GYPSY, THE OTHER RECORDINGS PALE BY COMPARISON. ETHEL, KLUGMAN, SANDRA CHURCH ARE TERRIFIC. JUST SAW THE RECENT GYPSY ON BROADWAY (WITHOUT BERNADETTE) AND THE CAST MEMBERS ARE REALLY NOT AS GOOD AS THE 1959 ORIGINAL. IF YOU LOVE A WONDERFUL SCORE AND GREAT SINGING, THIS ALBUM IS A MUST.
