Free Music Notes for Gypsy - A Musical Fable (1959 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: So many good things about this one.... Hit: 4 Stars
First and foremost, the exciting, wonderfully orchestrated and performed songs by Jule Styne (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics), which are, always were and always will be fresh and excellent. From the dazzling overture through each and every one of the songs, you are mesmerized. Second, the sound quality of this restored reissue of the original LP, which is excellent. Third, the supporting cast, who all do very well with their songs. The three ecdysiasts are a delight with "You Gotta Get a Gimmick." Paul Wallace as Tulsa, one of the chorus boys in Dainty June's act, is amazing in "All I Need Now Is The Girl;" he and the music make for a thrilling combination. Lane Bradbury as Dainty June overdoes the squealing and wretched quality of her songs, but isn't that the point? Sandra Church as Louise/Gypsy has a beautiful voice, very mature and expressive, even when she's supposed to be playing a 15-year-old! And, saving the best for the last but most definitly not the least, there is "the Merm," who proved she still had it after nearly 30 years in the buisiness and went down into Broadway history in the process in the role, THE ROLE of Mama Rose. Wonderfully belting out "Some People" and the all-time classics "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Rose's Turn," she is also very charming in the quieter numbers, "Small World" and "You'll Never Get Away From Me." She, Church, and Jack Klugman as Herbie are all great in "Together Wherever We Go," as well. Every nuance of each character is captured in these songs; how many other cast recording can claim that? I cannot forsee any reason at all why you would regret buying this CD, so just buy it and get it over with! Remember, "Get yourself a gimmick, and you, too, can be a star!"
Free Music Review: Buy Any recording of Gypsy EXCEPT this one! Hit: 4 Stars
Ok, i was contemplating earlier today about whether i should lie about Ethel Merman and say that she's great------or if i should speak my mind. I decided to speak my mind. Here i go: Before i heard this cd, i just assumed Ms. Merman would be Amazing as Mama Rose. I was in for a big shock. She doesn't even sing! She screams and shouts with phlem in her throat! Bette Midler is so much better than Ms. Merman was. I know that Ethel Merman tried, but she failed, in my opinion. The rest of the cast is acceptable, but many of the songs are not in their complete versions (i.e.: "Small World", "Together Wherever We Go"). Also, the sound quality is far superior on the other 3 versions. The other interpretations of Mama Rose (Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, or Bette Midler) are all a better bet for your money. Don't buy this cd unless you insist on having the origonal version of the show.Enjoy!
Free Music Review: Nothing wrong with this one Hit: 4 Stars
Boy did I struggle with which version of Gypsy to get... I finally decided on the original cast version and found that is was authentic, had a wonderful feel and pace and that, in fact, there was nothing wrong with this one. It is digitally remastered but still retains the ambience of the era. No one compares to Ethel. Her character jumps out to you in her interpretation of the songs. Who could do it better than the person it was written for. Written for her style, her voice, her power. The blend of voices in some of the other songs are fantastic. From intonation to timing and rythm, this recording was wonderful. If you want to get as close to the authentic intent of this show as possible- you'll want to get the original cast recording.
Free Music Review: Only Ethel Merman Hit: 4 Stars
Finally, I own a remastered recording of this musical. Having heard the Tyne Daly version, I am convinced there is only one Rose: Ethel Merman. She is not dainty around the songs, but composer Jule Styne seemed to be aware of that as he composed music that was adapted to her lungs. But that's what many of us paid for. We want to hear Merman belt out a song and make us soar as only a good belter can do it. Rosalind Russell who is the quintessential Auntie Mame could not replace Merman. Fortunately the musical and the album give Merman plenty of songs to sing. Even "Small World" a gentler song gets full volume. And this remastering makes it an even greater pleasure to hear.
Free Music Review: An excellent recording of a true musical theatre classic. Hit: 4 Stars
"Some People." "Everything's Coming Up Roses." "Together." Ethel Merman got some of her most indentifiable songs from Gypsy, and this recording demonstrates why. But her powerful voice is only one reason to buy this cast recording--the music is excellent, and the rest of the cast extremely entertaining as well. Though the extra material included in this version isn't quite as essential as has been the case in other recordings in this series, this remastered version preserves this classic the way it was meant to be heard. Don't miss it!
