This is the solo debut from the co-founder of Colombian Latin alternative band Aterciopelados. Features guest vocals from Platinum-selling artists Julieta Venegas, Alex Ubago, and Aterciopelados front woman Andrea Echeverri. After the critical and commercial success of 2001's "Gozo Poderoso", which landed Aterciopelados on the Top 10 of the Billboard Top Latin Album Sales chart as well as a coveted appearance on Leno, Buitrago took time off to self-produce this record.
Best known as co-founder of the vaunted Colombian Latin alternative band Aterciopelados, Hector Buitrago follows band singer and co-leader Andrea Echeverri into the solo arena with Conector. Aterciopelados is known for its ability to fuse rock, electronic ,and traditional music from around the globe, and Buitrago continues that voyage here. With vocal help from Echeverri and Spanish pop star Alex Ubago (in a duet on "Altisimo," no less) as well as well as from platinum-selling Julieta Venegas, Buitrago pulls together a skilled album that stands proudly next to Aterciopelados's work. Highlights include the poppy "Altisimo," the violin-driven "Durgamaloka," closer "Tiempo Paralelo Le" (which sounds like it could have been on the Echeverri solo album), and the modern but earthy "Troncoroca Vientomar." Hardly announcing the demise of Aterciopelados, Conector is simply another working name for a creative crew that effortlessly transcends music borders to conjure ecumenical visions of a musical world as it should be. -- Tad Hendrickson
