Free Music Notes for Hair: Original Soundtrack Recording - Special Anniversary EditionFree Music Review: Never gonna cut this "Hair" Hit: 5 Stars
I saw the movie version of "Hair" when it came out back in 1979. I was so floored by what I saw that I went out and bought the 2-record vinyl soundtrack album the next day. I have now listened to this album at least once a week since then. The Anniversary edition is a vast improvement on the original CD soundwise, and restores two incidental pieces, "Party Music" and "My Conviction" which were on the vinyl, but cut from the first CD issue, to the mix. There is much to love about this album, as many of the songs were familiar to all of us already. Ren Woods' stunning performance of "Aquarius", and Cheryl Barnes' gorgeous "Easy To Be Hard" are alone worth the price of the CD, but then you hear all the other songs, with then-unknowns Nell Carter, Ellen Foley, and Charlayne Woodard (most recently seen as "Sister Peg" on "Law & Order:Special Victims Unit") sprinkled throughout the movie and the soundtrack album, in superlative performances. The actors mostly voiced their own songs for the film, in one hilarious turn, the voices of the Black Recruiting Officers during "White Boys" are dubbed in by the classic soul group the Stylistics. And memorably, Melba Moore and Ronnie Dyson (from the original play) make a cameo in the film and perform "3-5-0-0". There is even a turn on the soundtrack by Betty Buckley, voicing for the Vietnamese girl singing in "Walking in Space". I guess when the calls were made for vocalists, many people who were then appearing in Broadway shows got the jobs. But it all adds up to one of the most memorable soundtrack albums EVER made. And the 20th Aniversary release says on the back of the jewel box that the first generation mixed masters were used for this release. The sparkling sound attests to that fact.
Free Music Review: Run, do not walk Hit: 5 Stars
If you have never seen the musical or the movie or heard the soundtrack in its entirety, you have missed one of the great musical and theatrical experiences. Hair is the the greatest of all American musicals. The quality of the music and the vibrant originality of the concept are as startling today as they were when the show debuted more than 30 years ago. Hair is often imitated (see Rent) but its indescribable magic has never been duplicated. There is not a single bad song in the set. "Aquarius," "Black Boys," "Easy to be Hard," "Walking in Space" and so many other of the show's songs are absolute masterpieces. The overwhelming impact of the title track approaches that of the Hallelujah Chorus. I have owned the Broadway soundtrack for years, and I have seen the stage version and the movie. However, I had never heard the movie soundtrack. It is an extraordinary effort, arguably superior to the exceptionally fine Original Broadway Cast recording. The song treatments depart significantly from those of the stage and movie productions. The performers are the same, but the soundtrack powers the songs with a gloriously funky, driving, quasi-disco beat that isn't as pronounced in the movie. Nell Carter is at her finest, as are Treat Williams, Cheryl Barnes, Melba Moore, Charlayne Woodard, and host of other musical stars. Indeed, with only a couple of minor exceptions, the voices are excellent. And I simply cannot overstate the effect of the penetrating beat. Groovy, man.

HAIR CAME OUT WHEN I WAS A TODDLER...I REMEMBR THE FIFTH DIMENSION'S VERSION OF 'AQUARIUS/LET THE SUNSHINE IN' PLAYING ALL OF THE TIME DURING THAT PERIOD...I ALSO REMEMBER WAS IT THE COWSILLS? i cannot remember the name but their rock version of' HAIR...I have never seen the play...but i had a copy of the fotonovel FROM THE MOVIE when i was 14 or 15...i am about to purchase the movie video...i had to buy the movie soundtrack after listening to the samples above the orchestration is out of this world!!! THE singing on this soundtrack is clear and full of life and emotion...just pure excitement!!!! I HOPE TO catch a local version of the play if it ever comes to town...i am thinking that the actors in the original play had to have powerful , soulful voices to carry these wonderful songs off...i highly recommed the movie soundtrack...it is fun to listen to...the previous reviews listed above are right on the money...during these difficult times go ahead and purchase this cd and relax with a smile as you listen to it ...
Free Music Review: A Thrilling Look at Yesterday's Counterculture! Hit: 5 Stars
Wow! It's a history lesson through music. The lyrics in Hair are soooo powerful that you will keep coming back for more. Through song, the people in the movie convey their strong feelings against society, typical of hippies during that time. My favorite songs are "Hair" (wow, talk about a powerful melody!), "I'm Black/Ain't Got No" (this song is amazing- I can't get sick of it), and "Abie Baby/Fourscore" (the Schoolhouse-rockish type melody is awesome)! I have to say that I honestly like all the songs on this C.D. They are very unique and have interesting messages protrayed through them. I only wish I could see the musical so I could experience the energy on stage. I would no doubt in my mind recommend this to everyone! You can't go wrong- this C.D covers many types of music (much like Rent) that is sure to satisfy almost anyones taste. This is one of the best C.D.'s I have purchased in a long time and I know you all will enjoy it too!
Free Music Review: Different and immensely enjoyable Hit: 5 Stars
I don't understand why so many disgruntled customers are complaining that this HAIR is musically different from the Original Broadway Cast. What's the point of doubling up by making the film sound exactly like the Broadway Cast? If you want to hear the Broadway sound, GET the Broadway cast recording. Yes, the orchestrations on this HAIR sound VERY different to the Broadway version -- it took me one listen to figure that out. But I haven't stopped playing it since I got it and after 20 playings on my iPod, I still can't get enough of it. If nothing else, it's worth owning just to hear Nell Carter belt out her numbers! And who would have thought Charlotte "Mrs Garrett" Rae could sing like that? Now I have TWO fantastic HAIR recordings to enjoy!
