Free Music Review: harmony and understanding Hit: 4 Stars
This "special anniversary" edition of the soundtrack to the movie "Hair" has its plusses and minuses. On the bright side, we get two numbers that were left off the original CD version of the soundtrack, "Party Music" and "My Conviction" which were previously available on vinyl only. The actors sing their songs with heart and soul and I love that! They never let go of a superfluous note and that's grand. The liner notes include good artwork and an essay by Joseph F. Laredo. On the other hand, the sound is definitely somewhat muffled for a mysterious reason; and the liner notes don't tell who performs each song. I would have liked that.
A few songs are definitely standouts in my mind but of course you will have your favorites, too. "Aquarius" is brilliantly done; just listening to it conjures up a vivid memory of what that opening sequence was like in the movie edition of the Broadway play. "Manchester" is upbeat and energetic; "Abie Baby / Fourscore" has a great sound to it; "I'm Black / Ain't Got No" is especially passionate with excellent backup singers; "My Conviction" shines bright; "I Got Life" is excellent; "Hair" is a song I could never forget-what a sound! "Hare Krishna" just plain sounds good; and "Where Do I Go?" stuns me with its natural beauty. "Black Boys" and "White Boys" are two fun numbers; and I also enjoy hearing the amazing "Easy to Be Hard" performed by Cheryl Barnes. "Good Morning Starshine" is terrific; "What a Piece of Work is Man" is done with great sensitivity; "Don't Put it Down" boasts a fine country flavor and the CD ends with the classic "The Flesh Failures (Let the Sunshine In)."
Overall, if you liked the movie "Hair" or the Broadway play, you should get this for your collection. The only true negative is that the sound quality could have been better; I just don't understand why they didn't clean this up for this release. Nevertheless, it's still an album of incredibly fine music. In addition, people who enjoy movie soundtracks may also want to get this.
