Free Music Notes for Hair: Original Soundtrack Recording - Special Anniversary EditionFree Music Review: a true blast from the past Hit: 4 Stars
My High School drama/musical club wanted this recording to study and for consideration for performance possibilities. Great music, some of the lyrics were heavy, but a very positive musical experience.
Free Music Review: The recipient of this gift was very pleased Hit: 4 Stars
I bought this as a gift, and they really liked it. If you liked the movie/ musical you will like this CD.
Free Music Review: Special Anniversary Edition? Hit: 3 Stars
Okay, when a CD is released commemorating an anniversary, and part of the sales pitch is "Special Anniversary Edition," don't you expect some cool previously unreleased tracks or somehing? As much as I love Hair soundtracks, including the movie soundtrack, I think it's odd they put out an anniversary edition commemorated by doing......nothing?The weak sales pitch aside, this CD has some great hits and some great misses. I always found it strange that the movie soundtrack included songs like "Air" and "Frank Mills" that were not used in the movie. In addition, both these tunes are the worst renditions I have ever heard, and in my opinion, should have been left out of the final cut. I bought the LP in '79, back when I was a huge mark for "HAIR!" and even then, it seemed like the folks who produced this album scrambled to put out the soundtrack without paying much attention to the overall finished product. On the plus side, the rendition of Aquarius is absolutely beautiful (although Ronnie Dyson's take is still the best), and "Ain't Got No" and "White Boys" are superb, thanks largely to the sassy & passionate voice of the late Nell Carter. The title track is good, and "Where Do I Go?" is an admirable take. Cheryl Barnes does the best version of "Easy To Be Hard" that I've ever heard, and the finale "Flesh Failures/Let the Sun Shine In" is quite moving. The movie soundtrack's takes on "Donna," "I Got Life," and "Manchester, England" are nothing special, but they don't butcher these classic Hair pieces either. Good soundtrack for Hair fans, but I personally would not pay full price.
Free Music Review: Disappointed. Hit: 3 Stars
I found myself quite irritated with this CD. The music was adapted from its original 1960s rock (which can be heard on the excellent original cast recording) to a 1970s jazzy-symphonic, soft shoe beat. The problem is that HAIR losing much of its energy and meaning when its anger and edge are smoothed over. The lyrics are the same, but the songs sound like they are being performed for play in an elevator or as part of a lounge act. It is just not the same. And the HAIR on this CD is not the HAIR that has been loved and repeated for decades; rather, it is a freeze frame of a late 70s. If you happened to prefer the music, movement, and feel of late 70s to that of 60s, then this CD is for you; otherwise, go with the original.
With that said, the version has one great feature that is available nowhere else: Cheryl Barnes performing "Easy to be Hard." It is amazing. Unfortunately, Barnes chose not to pursue a show business career, so this is the only place you will ever hear her lovely voice.
Free Music Review: Preferable to broadway soundtrack Hit: 3 Stars
'Hair" is an important play from the 1970's.
It was one of the first mainstream plays to incorporate contemporary rock music...or so I thought. When I listen to the Broadway version, in hindsight, it sounds like basic, conventional Broadway tunes given a faux "rock" sheen.
I like the movie soundtrack better since the musicality of these songs are expounded upon, the musicianship shines and the songs look more like "real" songs rather than just accompaniments to a play.
I enjoyed the play but I'm not all crazy about "Hair" or any other play. I'm a "music" fan and like to see if a soundtrack holds up on it's own, rather than just being an accompaniment to a play.
This movie soundtrack vastly improves upon all of the songs from the play soundtrack. I especially like "Aquarious" with it's lengthy instrumental opening before it erupts into the classic lyrics.
