Free Music Notes for Hairspray (2002 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: YOU CAN'T STOP THE BEAT!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This is the real deal...of course I have a soft spot in my heart for cult musicals...(for reasons I can never really relate...but believe me, I have somme experience) The problem is combining camp with seriousness enough to make the piece mean something. For all it's hair and camp this show has some meaning...and a huundred thousand pounds of heart. This is not some knock off. The lyyrics are sometimes fairly cliched(ton of bricks etc) but they are that way for a reason. This is a musical that goes past the cliches and plays with them in order to deliver it's heartfelt passion. Where do you start...how bout Good Morning Baltimore...and beyond...Run and Tell That...I can hear the bells...Welcome to the 60's... but the all out cruncher is Cant stop the beat. This is a finale to end all finales. I defy you to not dance during listening. And people talk about Fierstien's voice. What a coup! This is the way the show keeps it's integrity. It's a cult musical and Harvey has guts. He just goes...And he is having the time of his life.If you want to rock the house and go for it...you have to listen to this musical. It is the motion of the ocean...and you cant stop the beat.
Free Music Review: Broadway's Newest Hit Hit: 5 Stars
It opened last night and the reviews are in. "Hairspray" is a smash hit along the lines of "The Producers." It should play for years. The 1987 movie with the late Divine and Rikki Lake was one of John Walter's first commercial movie hits. They've done it again on Broadway. It has one of the best original scores that have been written for a musical in a number of years. Put on your headset and you'll think you're back in the 60's with big hair, bee bop music and cast of characters you'll fall in love with. "Good Morning Baltimore" sung by Marissa Jaret Winokur as Tracy Turnblad is dynamite. Mary Bond Davis as Motormouth Maybelle is reminiscent of many Motown artists. She has a tremendous voice and two powerful songs to show her talent. As Edna Turnblad, Harvey Fierstein is a riot. His distinctive raspy voice gives a very wonderful sound to Edna. While Divine is a hard act to follow Fierstein delivers the goods. "Welcome to the 60's", "Big, Blonde and Beautiful" and "The Big Dollhouse" are gems. Dick Latessa does a wonderful job as Wilbur Turnblad Edna's husband. They have a very touching duet "Your Timeless to Me." There isn't a weak link in the cast. Mark Shaiman's score shines.
Free Music Review: You'll be singing along with this CD in no time! Hit: 5 Stars
...I wrote: "I wanted to see Hairspray when I was in New York over Labor Day. Come to find out, it's sold out until February--and with good reason!" These words ring true even more now that I HAVE seen it on Broadway. This is truly a fantastic show! From the first time I heard the opening number, Good Morning Baltimore, I thought to myself--this is going in the CD player in my bathroom! The composers really captured the style and feel of the 60's sound, especially in songs like Momma I'm a Big Girl Now and It Takes Two. The songs have fantastic lyrics at times hilarious and at other times serious. Every member of the cast has a terrific voice, especially "Penny" who sounds a little like Miss Dipesto from Moonlighting until she starts to sing. Her powerful singing voice coupled with her love interest "Seaweed" will bring shivers to your spine when you listen to Without Love. If you are one of those people who loves to sing along with some fantastic showtunes, you will LOVE this CD. Even after having the CD for months, I still can't stop listening to it! Also--listen for a hilarious hidden track after the final number. It's a riot but it sends a good message about drunk driving!
Free Music Review: Best new rock score broadway's seen in years. Hit: 5 Stars
From the first drum beats of "Good Morning Baltimore" to the high energy finale "You Can't Stop The Beat," HAIRSPRAY has any listener hooked. Following in the dance steps of such favorites as "Grease" and "Smokey Joe's Cafe," this show is a refreshing spin on the classic pop-rock musical. John Waters, Marc Shaiman and Scott Whittman have succeeded in creating a score that not only comments on most societal misfortunes, but also keeps your cheeks lifted and your spirits high. HAIRSPRAY sports a stellar cast, featuring fresh face and funky voice (think Ellen Green's powerful Audrey from "Little Shop" meets whiney chorus girl from "42nd Street") Marissa Jaret Winokur, and the absolutely divine (pun intended) Harvey Fierstein as Tracy and Edna Turnblad respectively. Around them they've cast the smoothest (Matthew Morrison), cool-nerdiest (Kerry Butler), growly (Corey Reynolds), diva-rocker (Linda Hart ), soulfull (Mary Bond Davis) classy (Dick Latessa) voices they could find. With a supporting cast of amazing rock, doo-wop, gospel, and jazz singers the sound is irresistable. Add a touch of pastel packaging, some ultra-clutch hairspray and welcome yourself to the 60's!!
Free Music Review: You Can't Stop this Fun on This CD Hit: 5 Stars
From the moment everyone's favorite upbeat, cute, fun, chubby girl sings "Uh uh uh Woke up today," your feet begin to tap and your body begins to sway and dance to the music...which is precisely what the shows producers want you to do. Based on the John Waters movie, Hairspray is about Tracy Turnblad, a chubby girl with a heart of gold, who wants nothing more to dance on her favorite show and and intergrate all people...all in spite of being over-sized and unpopular. This music is nothing short of pure fun and joy. All of the songs are pop and upbeat with one ballad sung absolutely beautifully. Marissa Jaret Winokur's voice is perfect for the role, and Kerry Butler is a goddess. Her voice is wonderful and when she belts, watch out! You go, gurl!! Also, the show's last song, You Can't Stop the Beat, is the most positive and inspiring song in the show, and I dare anyone not to smile and dance the second it starts. Marc Shaiman and Scott Whittman, the people who brought us the irreverant songs of South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, write the perfect song and lyrics of the show's period and style. Look out Momma, cause I'm a big girl now!!
