Free Music Review: Wonderful show!
Hit: 5 Stars

What a fabulous show! I saw Hairspray in previews in NYC three days before it officially opened, and I must say that it was sheer joy put to the stage. The music is catchy, smart and wonderful, the acting is superb and hysterical, and the overall production is virtually flawless. The CD captures the heart of the show and the almost frantic energy of the cast. Perfectly cast, the entire ensemble gives it their best. Each song has its own personality, every character comes to life, it is musical comedy at its best. Harvey Fierstien as Edna Turnblad brings a smile to your face the minute you hear him sing, Tracy has a voice that can pierce through anything, and her spunky energy shines, and the rest of the cast sings brilliantly. The audience was electric when I saw the show, everyone was anticipating a ton of fun, and the show came through. I highly recommend this CD cast recording to everyone who loves musical comedies...NYC/Broadway can be proud of all of the high quality shows there right now, including Thoroughly Modern Millie, Urinetown, Producers, and The Full Monty. Thank you to all of the folks bringing these great shows to life!

Free Music Review: You Can't Stop the Fun on this CD
Hit: 5 Stars

From the moment everyone's favorite upbeat, cute, fun, chubby girl sings "Uh uh uh Woke up today," your feet begin to tap and your body begins to sway and dance to the music...which is precisely what the shows producers want you to do. Based on the John Waters movie, Hairspray is about Tracy Turnblad, a chubby girl with a heart of gold, who wants nothing more to dance on her favorite show and integrate all people...all in spite of being over-sized and unpopular. This music is nothing short of pure fun and joy. All of the songs are pop and upbeat with one ballad sung absolutely beautifully. Marissa Jaret Winokur's voice is perfect for the role, and Kerry Butler is a goddess. Her voice is wonderful and when she belts, watch out! You go, gurl!! Also, the show's last song, You Can't Stop the Beat, is the most positive and inspiring song in the show, and I dare anyone not to smile and dance the second it starts. Marc Shaiman and Scott Whittman, the people who brought us the irreverent songs of South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, write the perfect song and lyrics of the show's period and style. Look out Momma, cause I'm a big girl now!!

Free Music Review: I don't know what everyone is talking about
Hit: 5 Stars

This show is absolutely amazing. This CD follows. It deserved every single Tony it recieved. This show has such a big heart and is very funny which I reccoment to everyone. Even though Harvey might not have the best voice in the world it adds humor to some peoples miserable lives. It gives hope and just makes you feel good. There is no squeaky voices on this CD and I think that you are all forgeting about Mary Bond Davis who plays Motormouth... she has an amazing voice along with the VERY talented Kerry Butler, Matt Morrison and Corey Reynolds. Marissa deserved her Tony, she is great on the Cd and has a BIG HEART! She is a wonderful actress. This show deserved everything that they got. I think that it should have won more Tony's because the dancing was tremendous and you left the show with a smile on your face. If you are reading this review... buy the CD- I bought it before I saw the show and I fell in love with it. The orchestra is great... especially the sax solos. You can really dance to it. You will love it and if you don't it just proves that you have no heart. This CD shows that "YOU CAN'T STOP THE BEAT!"

Free Music Review: The pompous musical is dead! Buy this CD!
Hit: 5 Stars

The musical theater gods must be smiling on us. Over the past several years it seems that we've been able to wave "goodbye" to the pompous and grandiose musical imports and say "hello" to wonderfully fun American musicals. "Hairspray" is just the latest in a string of fun and inventive (but not brainless) shows to grace the Great White Way. How lucky we are to have The Producers, Urinetown, and Hairspray all playing currently on Broadway--heck, I'll throw Thoroughly Modern Millie in there, too.

This cast recording is stellar. I'm not usually a fan of the doo-wop song style a la "Grease", but the music of Hairspray is fabulous. Shaiman and Wittman are to be commeded. The cast is wonderful---from Marissa to Harvey to Dick to the secondary cast members. Each song is inventive without being cloying or cheesy. The music is honest-to-goodness wonderful.

I haven't seen it on Broadway (yet) but my brother has. He called during intermission and was completely blown away and wishing he was seeing it the next evening, too.

My advice? Buy this CD!

Free Music Review: HAIRSPRAY is a SMASH HIT!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

HAIRSPRAY is everything a musical should be. They don't make them like this anymore ... or maybe they never did ... because Hairspray is one of a kind, and it is fabulous. It has EVERYTHING! Great music, dancing, costumes, sets, the characters are wonderful and enjoyable, and under all the fluff and fun of the show, it carries a message of self acceptance and teachs us of a time before our country was integrated. Marissa Winokur is AMAZING and has a great voice and is an amazing actress with wonderful comedic timing. The rest of the cast is just as wonderful.
Now, there are those who stick up their noses at HAIRSPRAY wondering where where all the "classics" like Les 'Miz and Oklahoma have gone. Well folks, it's the year 2003 and those boring old shows are dead (thank god). There is nothing wrong with a show that is just fun (like Mama Mia) and can make the audience smile. Why not?...THAT is real musical theater.
This recording is fabulous and I recommend that you run and don't walk to get your tickets to HAIRPRAY right now!
