Free Music Notes for Hairspray (2002 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: Broadway is fun again! Hit: 5 Stars
Hairspray, a new Broadway musical based on John Water's 1988 film, tells the story of how Tracy Turnblad, a short, fat Baltimore nobody, finds love, acceptance, and the positive values of Integration in 1962 Baltimore. The Music is fun, fast, fresh and memorable. Where Female impersonator, the late Devine, played Tracy's mother Edna in the film, the musical has cast Writer, actor Harvey Fierstein (Torch Song Trilogy) as Edna Turnblad, and his foghorn voice adds to the proceedings. Like the best musicals, in Harispray, the songs help advance the plot. From the Opening "Good Morning Baltimore", and Motor Mouth Maybelle's "Big, Blonde, and Beautiful" to the rousing closing number "You Can't Stop The Beat" the songs and performers make you want to get up and dance. It's better than a workout video. I love it!

I have thought about buying this CD for a long time, but was often scared away by the cover. But boy am I glad that I did! The cast works well together, and Matthew Morrison and Mary Bond Davis stand out above the rest. I do have to warn you that the songs get stuck in your head easily, esp. 1 (which was stuck in my head for four days straight), 3, and 13. Without Love (13) is the best song on the CD and hopes to revitalize the Broadway love ballad, rock style! IF you are a broadway [fan] then I would rate this CD somewhere between the OLC of Phantom of the Opera and the OBC of Into The Woods. But I must tell you that the CD is not perfect, watch out for song 5 it tries a little hard to be vampy and evil, but is too Disney and sounds like Cruella De Ville. But maybe that is just me being nit-picky!...

Oh God, how does one even start to review Hairspray? Comedy. Anti-Racism. Amazing singing. Amazing dancing. Incredible costumes. Harvey Fierstein. Possibly one of the best plots for a musical I have ever seen, tied with WIcked and Spamalot (simply because Monty Python is the perfect remedy to any bad humor), and the singing is impeccable. Marissa Janet Winokur is drop-dead hilarious, with a voice to knock out anyone in the audience. Penny is a clown, but a funny one, Seaweed has a crystal-clear voice and is a hearthrob, and Link is....well. Harvey Fierstein is the light of the show though, as Tracy's mother, and lights up all the songs he (she) is in, like Welcome to the 60's or briefly in You Can't Stop the Beat. All in all, a very worthwhile album to have for people who like upbeat music.
Free Music Review: Destined for longevity! Hit: 5 Stars
I am extremely picky about musicals. In the past twelve years, I am aware of, oh, say...two, maybe three which have made to Broadway AND have actually deserved to be there. Good Broadway scores are few and far between. Well...add Hairspray to the list. It's cheesy, it's funny, it's irreverent, and it's impossible to disklike! On the surface the show looks like a big piece of sugary candy, but take a closer look at the lyrics, and you'll notice--gasp--a bit of naughtiness? Harvey Fierstein wins my favorite character award, but all the voices on this recording are outstanding. The songs will get stuck in your head, but since they're so darn snazzy, you'll probably be smiling! Buy the album, and, if you can, go see this show in New York while the original cast is still in it!
Free Music Review: Only The Best!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I didn't really want to buy this Cd as i dont care for Comedies and people compared to the Producers wich was not a musical that i cared for. I recieved the CD as a present and the day after i got it i knew every word. The music is top quality and as are the lyrics wich are in my opinion some of the best Broadway has seen in a while. The only problem i had with the show itself was the little usage of Kerry Butler. Who shines and shows her brillance as Penny. I reccemond this CD just for her and I also reccomend Bat Boy for the same reasons. That is not to say other cast members dont shine. Tracy, Link, and Edna are all fabulous. As a are seaweed motormouth, and Lil inez. This is truly a bresh of fresh air. If these songs dont bring a smile to your face i dont know what will!
