Free Music Notes for Hairspray (2002 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: One Of The Decade's Best Hit: 5 Stars
"Hairspray" has a terrific score by Marc Shaiman & Scott Whittman, with songs that really stand up to repeated listenings.
The cast is packed with great voices, especially that of its breakout star, Tony-Winner Marissa Jaret Winokur. Even Harvey Fierstein's star-turn as Edna is a blast!
The whole cd is great from beginning to end, but standout tracks include:
Good Morning Baltimore (great opening number)
I Can Hear The Bells
Welcome To The 60's (personal favorite)
Run And Tell That
Big, Blonde And Beautiful
(You're) Timeless To Me
Without Love
I Know Where I've Been (very inspirational)
You Can't Stop The Beat (great send-off)
A really fun cd!
Free Music Review: ENERGIZING Hit: 5 Stars
The play is fluff, and a little corny, but the music is so-o-o energizing. I get that same high energy feeling every time I play the CD that I had watching the live cast. Seeing the movie or the play would enhance the enjoyment, but isn't necessary. The play plot is so faithful to the movie you could almost watch the movie and listen to the CD. All the songs are winners in this genre with the exception of "Miss Baltimore Crabs" which is a one line joke, not a song, and the title song is just dumb and ends on an unnecessary,PG-17 pun. CD techology lets me skip those and rock twice to others. Great housework music - makes you want to sing and dance with the vacuum cleaner.
Free Music Review: Best Music I've ever heard Hit: 5 Stars
This is some of the best music i've ever heard! I'm 15 and in love with Hairspray. The music is the closet i've ever gotten to the real thing. I've never seen the actual production, but the music lets me actually visualize the cast on stage! I can never get the songs out of my head either. Marissa Jaret Winokur makes the music come to life, with her suprisingly un-annoying squeaky voice. Penny has the voice of a diva once she turns into a "checkered board chic". Once I hear the music I HAVE to dance...I cannot possibly sit still when the music is playing! I love the last song "You can't stop the beat" It really is a blast of a CD to listen to!
Free Music Review: Awesome!! Hit: 5 Stars
Hairspray is one of my favorite CDs!! I am not a huge fan of Harvey Fierstein, but Corey Reynolds, Dick Letessa, and Kerry Butler make up for the scratchy voice times one hundred. All of them are terrific. Also Marissa Jaret Winokur and Matt Morrison are good, but not spectacular. I think what keeps this show together is the throwback of the music. People interested in oldies should like this. The best songs on the CD are "Without Love" sung by the four teenage leads and "Mama, I Am A Big Girl Now" with Penny, Tracy, their "moms" and the VonTussles. Everone in this show is very talented and I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes oldies or showtunes!
Free Music Review: This was absolutely great Hit: 5 Stars
I am by no means a musical genius but I do know what I like and I certainly love this to death. This is surprisingly upbeat and could be construed as somewhat sappy in some parts but there are a few self-confidence songs (Big, Blonde and Beautiful speaks to me.. at least in 2/3 of these choices.)
As to the voices of the actors & actresses that are in here, I do agree they're not exactly not Oberlin Conservatory calibur but I do think that their voices fit here in since I vividly remember seeing the original movie and if the Turnblatts(sp??) were allowed to sing in that movie, I'd think they'd sound like the way it sounds on this soundtrack.
