Free Music Notes for Hairspray (Soundtrack to the Motion Picture) AlbumFree Music Review: Just too many hairs out of place! Hit: 1 Stars
I have to admit, as the fan of the Broadway show, I was somewhat excited about this movie, even though they chose to mis-cast John Travolta in the part of Edna. After hearing the album the excitement has fizzled like a beehive in a South American rainforest. While there are some good performances on the album, I have to say I am extremely disappointed. For starters some of the stand out numbers from the original Broadway show have been omitted such as "Momma, I'm A Big Girl Now" (disgracefully tacked on to the end credits it seems), "The Big Dollhouse" (completely GONE!), and "Cooties" (once again tacked on as an afterthought but not a production). Another let down is John Travolta's horrible portrayal of Edna...I mean, just what kind of accent is he supposed to be speaking anyway? He sounds like a cross between a dying moose and a really bad Cher impersonation. Harvey Fierstein's Edna was comical, brash, loveable and rough around the edges, where as Travolta's comes off with this warbled speech that makes him sound like Droopy Dog, turning the character into something pathetic and not the least bit comical. And as soulful and wonderful as I think Queen Latifah is (she was amazing in "Chicago") she just does not have the singing chops to tackle such a gospel inspired role as Mamma "Motormouth" Maybelle. On a good note, although physically I do not think she was right for the part or even a very good dancer, Nikki Blonsky SINGS a great Tracy, Zac Efron is outstanding as Link and Michelle Pfeiffer makes Velma her own. It seems sad that the producers could take such care in their other casting attempts and then completely drop the ball when it came to a stand out role such as Edna. I have not seen such a bad choice in casting since Lucille Ball was grossly miscast as Mame in the film adaptation of that Broadway show. Get this album if you must, but do yourself a greater favor and get the original Broadway cast album, if nothing else then to hear Harvey Fierstein cackle and croak out the role of Edna as it should have been done for the film.
