Free Music Notes for Hairspray (Soundtrack to the Motion Picture)

Free Music Review: Fun!
Hit: 5 Stars

Before this movie, I had never heard the OBC recording nor had I seen the original movie so I knew absolutely nothing about any of the songs. The only reason I went to see this movie was because it is a musical and I'm a huge fan of musicals...well I am really glad I saw it because it is amazing! The music is absolutely fantastic and I think that the casting was very well done.

I really like the fact that the casting directors decided to cast new-comer Nikki Blonsky in a cast full of big names (John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pheiffer, etc...). It just made the movie that more enjoyable for me.

All right now down to the soundtrack. I love it! The musical numbers just make you want to get up and dance. Everyone has wonderful singing voices, especially Nikki. She did a beautiful job and when I learned that this was her first movie I couldn't believe it; she is a natural. John Travolta was beyond incredible as Tracy's mother. He made Edna believable and that is really hard to do! Michelle Pheiffer did a great job as well. I remember watching her in "Grease 2" which was the last time I heard her really sing in a movie.

All in all, this is a great musical with a great message that you don't have to be a certain size, color, ethnicity, etc... to do what you want to do. You just need to go out there and do it. And that's a great message for anyone. I would definitely recommend this to anyone. You'll love both the movie and the soundtrack.

Whatever slight problems I have with this cinematic adaptation of the show, they are not reflected in the excellent soundtrack. I don't think there's been any musical soundtrack as much fun and catchy since "Grease" nearly thirty years ago. (Sorry, "Grease 2" fans, if there are any.) The orchestrations, pitch, vocals - everything is right on target. (Though there were a few times I was afraid John Travolta would lose his voice...) Nikki Blonsky does a wonderful job as Tracy Turnblad, and there can't be enough said about Queen Latifah's vocals. Zac Efron and Elijah Kelley also do great work. I thought I was starting to get over the "get off your butt and dance" feeling, but I must say this proved me wrong.

As for the "Grease" and "Grease 2" connection, how fun is it that we now have Travolta and Pfeiffer facing off in the same movie musical? Pfeiffer can finally put to rest the demons of "Cool Rider" as she more than acquits herself with her great version of "Miss Baltimore Crabs."

The new songs for the movie, including "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far" are great, and while "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" was cut, the version here with the Three Tracy's: Blonsky, Winokur and the inimitable Ricki Lake, more than makes up for its absence from the main action of the film. This soundtrack is one of the best antidotes for the long, hot summer.

Free Music Review: The Most "Fun" Album of the Decade!
Hit: 5 Stars

Gosh, this CD is jumpin'. I thought the original cast recording was great fun, but the Hairspray movie soundtrack brings it to whole new level. Every song makes you want to just get up and dance...and sing along. The orchestra background packs a tremendous punch, never letting up. And the vocals - couldn't have asked for better. There's just so much energy in these songs, more so than in the Broadway version even. Songs I normally pass on in the OBC such as "Miss Baltimore Crabs," "Run and Tell That," "Big, Blonde, and Beautiful" "You're Timeless to Me" and "I know Where I've Been," are re-orchestrated and resung to become such a pleasure to listen to.

The best songs of the Hairspray movie album are "Run and Tell That," "Big Blonde and Beautiful," "You Can't Stop the Beat," and "Welcome to the 60's." Special mention to "New Girl in Town." I just really like that song. But really, all the songs are very exciting and feature remarkable talent. I mean, I knew Queen Latifah was good, but she blew me away in her renditions of "Big,Blonde, Beautiful" and "I Know Where I've Been." And they couldn't have found a better Tracy in Nikki Blonsky. I've never heard another album that's so much fun to listen to. They truly outdid themselves with this hugely successful recording.

Free Music Review: HAIRSPRAY ROCKS!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Hairspray (Soundtrack to the Motion Picture)
Hairspray is an incredibly wonderful musical soundtrack! It's instantly obvious that a lot of talent and thought went into making it. Virtually every song will make you feel the beat, smile and want to run to see the movie. It's also a great value because all the songs from the Broadway show are included and they've added about 3 excellent new songs for the movie. All of the stars have very good singing voices and the orchestrations are outstanding. Ms. Blodsky is an enthusiastic Tracey Turnblad with a great voice. Michelle Pfeiffer can really sing well and her voice conveys the humorous evil of the villain, Velma Von Tussle. Zac Efron, James Marsden & Queen Latifah are, also, in great form. It's worth buying even you have the Broadway show CD because most of the songs sound different than the original versions. John Travolta plays Edna very differently from Divine or Harvey Feinstein; his Edna is a chubby/sweet/sensitive cocquette. The song "Cooties" is given a very clever & different treatment from the Broadway show version. Very highly recommended to anyone who likes 60's style music, Broadway shows or has a sense of humor.
