According to Billboard they were among the top recording acts of the 1980's. Over a period spanning 16 years beginning in 1974 they recorded for three different labels, placed nearly three dozen singles on the Top 100 Singles chart and had several highly successful albums to boot. Yes, the music of Daryl Hall and John Oates seemed to be everywhere during this period. In 2005, RCA released the two disc compilation "The Essential Daryl Hall and John Oates". In my estimation, this is by far the finest anthology of the boys that has ever been offered.
Hall and Oates began their recording career at Atlantic records in the early 1970's. In 1974, they had a minor hit with a tune called "She's Gone". Although this record was not wildly successful it was clear that these guys were going to be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years. RCA records took note and signed Hall & Oates in 1975. Their very first release for the label "Sara Smile" was on the charts for some 7 months and peaked at #3 in the spring of 1976. Atlantic records took note and re-released "She's Gone" which also became a Top Ten hit in '76.
Over the next decade or so at RCA Hall and Oates would have 13 more Top Ten hits. Five of these went all the way to #1. Enjoy once again outstanding tunes like "Rich Girl", "Kiss On My List", "One On One" and one of my personal favorites "Out Of Touch" from the golden year 1984. Among the other memorable tunes included in this fine collection are the 1981 hit "Private Eyes", "Say It Isn't So" and the wildly popular "Maneater" which topped the charts for 4 weeks in 1982. "The Essential Daryl Hall & John Oates" offers up a generous 37 tracks so you are also able to sample some of the guys lesser known hits such as "It's A Laugh" and "Wait For Me" to name but a couple.
in 1988, Hall & Oates signed a new deal with Arista records. They managed to hit the charts four more times with tunes like "Everything Your Heart Desires", "Missed Opportunity", "Downtown Life" and "So Close". All of the original Arista recordings are included here as well.
In my opinion "The Essential Daryl Hall & John Oates" is an exceptional value. You get an awful lot of music for your buck. My only disappointment was that the 1985 "live" recording "A Nite At The Apollo Live! The Way you Do The Things You Do/My Girl" was not included for some strange reason. That was a great record. These are all the original recordings you would remember from the radio. Highly recommended!
