Free Music Notes for Our Kind of SoulFree Music Review: HALL & OATES SOULFUL MASTERPIECE~BRAVO GUYS!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Daryl Hall has been working his way up to this masterful collection since 1993 when the classic underrated "I'm In A Philly Mood" was released which clearly showed that he is one of the greatest soulful singers on the planet!!! Opening with a gospel-soul Hall/Oates/Paul original, in "Let Love Take Control" Daryl is at the peak of his wildly soulful powers and this moving performance easily places him in the company of greats such as Al Green though Daryl is a true original and the ultimate blue-eyed soul master!!! An old Four Tops classic "Standing In The Shadows Of Love" is turned into a funky jam that is a classic once again as this version cooks..."I'll Be Around" is a smooth soulful fantasy and Daryl hits it in all the right spots! If Gamble&Huff still had it going on they would get together with Daryl after hearing this funky cooking version of "Use To Be My Girl" that takes this classic up a notch higher than the great original..."Soul Violins" proves that blue-eyed soul when its by Daryl is incomparable as this is another masterpiece that is the ultimate listening experience and to think that this guy also wrote this amazing complex gorgeous song..."Grammy Awards" please take notice..."I Can Dream About You" was originally slated for Hall and Oates and hearing this wonderous version one can understand the composers original intent as this becomes a classic all over again...soulful pleasure with another Daryl original and "Don't Turn Your Back On Me" flows beautifully into a Smokey Robinson original "Fading Away" which proves to be a classic power ballad that could be a hit by Hall & Oates if given airplay..."Neither One Of Us" is fine but still belongs to Gladys but Daryl does nail an old Marvin Gaye B-side "After The Dance" and kinda takes "Rock Steady" away from "The Queen" which is an amazing feat in itself!!! "Love TKO" is a soul-deep tour-de-force performance while "What You See Is What You Get" shows that John Oates has alot of soul and this fine performance is definitive. Barry White's "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" gets a great rhythmic workout and a romantic "You Are Everything" features Daryl again at his best and it is clear that this incredible singer could have been the lead singer a classic soul group over the past thirty or so years or a least a solo Superstar act on Motown ! Few singers have done justice to Al Green classics and Tina Turner comes to mind with her incredible version of "Let's Stay Together" and "I'm Still In Love With You" by Daryl is on that same high level of greatness and this winning version is a smooth soul classic all over again as is an inspired version of "Ooh Child" which closes this brilliant collection of new soulful classics!!! If the music industry has any credibility left it will push this amazing collection of great songs to the heights that it deserves...don't miss this MASTERPIECE~BRAVO DARYL HALL AND JOHN OATES!!!!
Free Music Review: Good job ... they do covers right Hit: 5 Stars
I'm a huge classic soul fan, Spinners and O'Jays being my favorites, with The Dramatics and Harold Melvin/Teddy Pendegrass not far behind.
I cringe when someone wants to cover these songs, like Joan Osborne doing "I'll Be Around" without much spunk or energy. It's written so darn well that even she can sound good signing it.
But if I was to pick a group to do classic soul covers it would be Hall & Oates. They have an appreciation and sense of history for the music, and have met and played with many of the musicians who sang those great songs. Instead of trying to replicate the originals (as R. Kelly did in butchering The Spinners' "Sadie"), they add their own Hall & Oates touches to them.
Of course The Spinners' (NOT Al Green as listen in a below review) "I'll Be Around" has a real nice feel to it, especially since it was done in a make-shift tropical island studio.
I also really like "I Can Dream About You" which originally sounded like a H & O song, as the late performer Dan Hartman said it was written for them. I don't think Daryl needed to change the lyrics, however.
Interesting version of "Whatcha See is Whatcha Get" but I didn't quite buy into it completely. The Dramatics just own that song, but props to John Oates for trying. Again, it is so sensationally written that it will never sound bad.
Great cover of "Love TKO" -- excellent signing by Daryl Hall.
Finally, the original songs on this CD are written like classic soul songs and I really enjoyed them. Daryl and John are to be commended for being bold enough to try it. It's a risky step, but I'm glad they took it. In their long, established musical careers, they owe it to themselves and their fans to take risks and experiement.
I'm glad they took this risk as it paid off. Excellent CD for classic soul fans, who won't be disappointed in these cover versions!
Free Music Review: A Pleasant Surprise Hit: 5 Stars
I don't usually write reviews about stuff I buy on Amazon, but I have to say something about this CD. I stumbled across this album when I was looking at some other music here on Amazon. I had previously purchased Michael McDonald's `Motown Two' and Amazon's computer-generated suggestions listed this as something that I might be interested in.
I often heard Hall & Oates songs on the radio during the 70's, 80's, and early 90's, but I was never really interested in their music enough to actually buy one of their albums. It's not that I thought their music was bad, they have had quite a string of hits and successes during their careers, it's just that most of their music wasn't really `my cup of tea'. My opinion of this album is different.
I bought this CD thinking that it would probably be just an average collection of `white-guys-singing-Motown' covers, but Daryl Hall and John Oates did a very good job on all of these songs. They are very soulful singers and their voices are well suited to covering these songs. John Oates did a great job on `What You See is What You Get'. All the songs on this CD are Motown classics and Mr.'s Hall & Oates did a very nice job on these renditions. In fact, I played this CD at a party and I had a couple of African-American friends comment on how soulful the songs were (for a couple of white guys, wink).
I am amazed at how many tracks are on this compilation. Most CD's nowadays have only about 9-12 cuts on it and they charge about $17-20 for it. This CD has 17 tracks, there's not a dog in the bunch, and it's only about $14. This is a really good deal for this amount/quality of music. I am already looking forward to `Our Kind of Soul, vol. 2.'
If you appreciate Hall & Oates' previous work and enjoy good Motown stuff, get this album. They did a very good job on it. You shouldn't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: An uplifting, wonderful CD -- listen again and again! Hit: 5 Stars
I'm one of those (former) 12-year-old pre-pubescent girls who fell in love with the Hall and Oates machine back in the early 80's. After seeing them a few times on MTV, I bought Private Eyes, then back one album to Voices. Then H20. Then I was scouring the racks at Musicland at the mall for anything else the duo had released, and there was a lot. I played Private Eyes so many times, my cassette wore through. By the time Big Bam Boom came out, I felt these two had stepped away from their roots, and the music wasn't that interesting to me anymore. But I continued to listen to my old tapes, then replaced those with CDs.
My cousin, a fellow H&O junkie (she was one of those 12-year-old girls right along side me), bought me Do it for Love two years ago, and I thought, "Wow! Now THIS is the Hall and Oates I remember." And then OKOS comes out...EVEN BETTER!
I have to say, first, that Daryl Hall sounds amazing, still. And as much as I really enjoy the remakes of Motown classics like Rock Steady, Neither One of Us, and O-o-h Child, my favorite has to be the original Let Love Take Control, the first track on the album, and one that never fails to make me smile. It's a rock-the-church-style gospel/love celebration, and is fun, happy, and uplifting.
The songs on this album that are covers are clean, and the arrangements have been re-worked to make them sound like they were written for Hall & Oates. There's a new kind of maturity in this CD, as well, a respect for those who have gone before, and a real joie de vivre in general.
Funny how life goes full-circle. Here I am, listening to these two again, these two who sound like they haven't aged a day in voice or in spirit. These guys have gotten back to what they love. And I think when you do what you love, it shows through in the quality of your work.
Free Music Review: SOULFULLY DELICIOUS!!! Hit: 5 Stars
The opening number, Let Love Take Control, written by Daryl and John is a gospel-soul cooker. This is one of the original songs on this work. One of the best originals that was co-written by Daryl is Soul Violins. Be certain to check it out. The other original, Don't Turn Your Back On Me, is vocally rich.
The other songs are familiar soul and/or R&B songs that Hall and Oates have brilliantly remade into new sounds. Daryl Hall's vocal on Fading Away is a journey. After The Dance is proof of Daryl's blue-eyed, second-to-none soul. Rock Steady blows the top of your head off! You cannot sit still while listening to that one. And What You See Is What You Get is over the top with John doing a hot vocal. What other blue-eyed soul singer but Daryl could attempt and match Al Green on I'm Still In Love With You? Hopefully you are lucky enough to get the Japanese cd with Me And Mrs. Jones added. It is the live version that all of us lucky Hall And Oates concert attendees have witnessed.
The vocal arrangements are fantastically executed. The instrumental arrangements are not only updated but wonderfully mastered. Daryl's and John's vocals are soulfully delicious, as is the entire work. Daryl Hall poured his soul into this work with his vocals as well as his co-arrangements and co-productions and it shows. A gifted artist, his talent is frequently overlooked. Those of us who have followed Daryl's solo career know what I am talking about and will seek this album out to complete their collection along with his solo works. By far, this is the topper of them all and well-worth waiting for! Thank you Hall & Oates for an incredible collection!
