Free Music Review: Gettin Back to the Basics
Hit: 5 Stars

This is their best work in a long time. They recorded a lot of classic soul songs. What makes this collection so unique is they recorded them close to how the songs were originally written. They use acoustic guitars and violins. Of course they put the classic H&O style. In many cases their version is better than the original.

There are a couple of new songs on the CD also. I like those also. I notice the boys are getting back to their roots the older they get. I would give this CD a 10 out of 10. With the best song being Soul Violins. If you like soul music this is a must for your collection.

The more I listen to this CD the more I like it! There is nothing better than sweet soul music done with acoustic instruments. I started reading the cover and found the CD was recorded in 5 weeks at Daryl's home in the Bahamas!

The background vocals are amazing. I just love the way they harmonize with each other. Daryl still has his pipes and can still hit those really high notes. He does a great rendition of the Al Green classic "Still in Love".

I heard an interview with John Oates one time were he said "he brings a certain shortness to the group". I think he is selling himself short! (Ha I made a pun) His rendition of "Ooh Child" is remarkable. It's like the song was written for him.

I noticed that on many of the songs some of the lyrics and the key were changed. At first I had a problem with this, because I am used to hearing the songs done a certain way. I get it now! They took these classic R&B songs and made them Hall & Oates songs. This was done intentionally and I have to say it works.

Free Music Review: Daryl Still knows what Soul is all about.
Hit: 5 Stars

Hall and Oats were one of the only Blue Eye Soul groups I believed understood what soul is about. Over the years I haven't heard much from them. I just happen to catch the concert on tv, it looked like it was at some big bar in the suburbs at first. But I understand it was in the Bahama's.
I was very delighted to hear that Daryl Hall still can sing. The songs were not songs from their music but covers of various R&B songs from people such as Gladys Knght and the O'Jays and the Four Tops. and one or two newer original songs. Whoever said their version of the O'Jays, She Use to Be My Girl was the worst song he ever heard must not of listened to any of the 10,000 cd's he has. It was fine, I get nervous when people sing covers of great R&B songs. Most do it pretty horrendously. Not Daryl Hall even 34 years later the man can still sing and he does a very good job singing that song. Surprisingly he took on sacred cows like Neither One of Us, by Gladys Knight and he was excellent. He did not try to over sing Gladys, he made the song his own. He sang Rock Steady like he has been singing it all of his life.
Same with Marvin Gaye's song.
Again I will say Hall and Oates were the only Blue Eye Soul group particulary Daryl Hall who knows what soul is about and that is why they were able to tackle songs most singers would sound foolish singing. This CD proves it.

Free Music Review: Hook after Glorious Hook
Hit: 5 Stars

This one has been out for a while, having been released in 2004. Yeah, I'm getting older and slower. But this is such a great release that I would feel negligent in not passing along a recommendation.

Those familiar with Hall and Oates are well aware that they represent the Philly soul sound, and a sweet sound that is. They have produced some simply wonderful hits over the years, with infectious hooks galore, but this time around, they have simply outdone themselves--this is an absolutely fabulous recording.

From the opening cut, an original titled "Let Love Take Control," which sounds as though it could have been a classic Philly soul tune from the `70s, on through dynamite renditions of classics such as Standing in the Shadows of Love," "I'll Be Around," "Used to Be My Girl," "Rock Steady," "What You See Is What You Get," and more, the hits just keep on coming, hook after glorious hook.

Readers who think I am someone who listens to little else than Mahler and ECM recordings may be shocked to know that I am such a huge fan of this sort of music. Hall & Oates, The Spinners, the Chi-Lites, The O-Jays--oh man, sweet sooooooul's got a hold on me! If you have any sort of affinity at all for soul music, you have to hear this disc. You'll be smiling and singing and dancing!

Free Music Review: a very good album of soul classics
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a very good album of soul classics. After over 30 years together, Hall and Oates pay tribute to the music that inspired them to become musicians. The best track is their cover of the Spinners song I'll Be Around, but there are so many others. I loved their version of Ooh Child. It is a very postive and optimistic song. Used To Be My Girl is another favorite of mine on this album. I also liked the song Used To Be My Girl. This song has a great beat and really captures the spirit of the original.

There is a beautiful rendition of You Are Everything on here. I think this is one of the best love songs ever written and Hall and Oates sing it so well. I liked the song Can't Get Enough of Your Love too. Hall and Oates' version of this song sounds just as soulful, but I think is more subtle and mellow than Barry White's original.

Neither One of Us is another highlight for me on this CD. Darryl Hall's voice has so passion singing this Gladys Knight classic. You can sense the pain of losing someone in his voice. I really liked it.

Our Kind Of Soul is a CD filled with great tunes. All of the tracks sound great and bring back a lot of memories for me. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoys classic soul.

Free Music Review: Great Tribute To Musical Influences
Hit: 5 Stars

Daryl Hall and John Oates have racked up dozens of hits in their thirty year career. The soulful crooners have returned to their roots with their 2004 release Our Kind of Soul. This album of 17 tracks includes covers of classic soul and R&B songs. Daryl Hall and John Oates sound as good as ever on this album which is the follow up to their 2002 release Do For Love.

It has never been a secret that this Philadelphia due was influenced by soul & R&B music. They have paid tribute to the musical influences on Our Kind of Soul.

The covers are really amazing. Daryl Hall and John Oates manage to cover these classic songs and give them their own spin without taking away from the integrity of the original songs. They give "I Can Dream About You," an acoustic spin. The 1984 Dan Hartman song was originally written for Hall and Oates according to the album notes.

"Love TKO," remains very similar to the original version whereas Daryl Hall and John Oates give "Ooh Child" the contemporary pop sound. This is a really great album that Daryl Hall and John Oates fans old and new will enjoy. This will be a great holiday gift.
