Free Music Notes for Halo 3 Original Soundtrack (2-CD Set)

Free Music Review: WOW - I'd like to give it 6 stars.
Hit: 5 Stars

To be honest, I was kind of disappointed with Halo 3's single-player campaign: the story wasn't as imaginative as it could have been, the characters weren't fleshed out (with the exception of Cortana), and the gameplay was a lot of "been there" and "done that." The one thing that lived up to my hopes was the musical score by Martin O'Donnell. To say that it lived up to my expectations is an epic understatement, but I just don't know how else to put it. This soundtrack is simply amazing. O'Donnell really gave it his all. I want to ramble on at a mile a minute using every superlative in the dictionary to describe it, and then make up my own when I run out. Thankfully I won't, but the music here is hard to describe any other way. A lot of what's here are old Halo themes reworked and re-recorded. On paper it might sound boring, but trust me: it's not. O'Donnell has always done excellent work with the Halo scores, but it was because of his compositions, not the synthesizers they were too often performed with. This time his music is finally being done justice, thanks in no small part to a real orchestra whose energy swells to rapturous heights in all the right places. But the quiet moments also sink perfectly into the background like they are supposed to, and the electronic meanderings are more competent than they were in the first two games' scores as well. The music feels alive now. You feel like you're hearing these old themes for the first time, and you get the feeling that this is the way they were always meant to be heard. This music makes me want to forge my own epic adventure; it inspires me, it makes me want to cry, and it moves me more than the actual game did. If there's anything you might find wrong with it, it's just the fact that there isn't enough "monk chanting" this time. But there's so much other amazing work here that you'll hardly even care. In fact, this soundtrack is so good that I'm almost tempted to sell back all the other Halo soundtracks. I would recommend this soundtrack to people who aren't into Halo or even video games. Marty O'Donnell has established himself as the best music composer in the video game industry, and Bungie is lucky to have him.

Free Music Review: The BEST one yet!!
Hit: 5 Stars

The HALO music is mathematical genius on a base-8 scale. The way Marty has induced variations into the orginial themes that we've all known since the first game are truly nothing short of brilliant accomplishment. Nothing bad can be uttered about HALO's music.

My favorite album so far has to be HALO 3. The dynamic range of instruments and their amplitude during crescendoes is just awesome to listen to. The music is epic, very moving and tells a story. I can just picture the game as I hear the music.

I could never get into classical music without hearing this stuff first!

The HALO 3 soundtrack is more of an orchestra type of sound more so than the others before it. HALO 2 soundtrack had a lot of popular rock music in it, as well as techo.

This soundtrack brings a return of many of the strong themes present in HALO and HALO 2, as well as Marty O'donell's talented use of variation, just like a master composer. I can find no fault in this soundtrack. The music is more riveting, more vivid and clear and has a great dynamic range, especially in the vocal choir. The Flood portions of music were truly horrific, while titles like Tribute or Greatest Journey are really touching.

In my opinion, this soundtrack is the epitome in soundtracks. It's what you'd expect to hear in top-budget movies. This represents the culmination of catching themes and beautiful music in a 7+ year long series. My hats off to the sound team at Bungie Studios, and whoever they may have worked with. And a big congrats and thank you to Marty to creating such great music!

Free Music Review: Freaking Amazing, no argument
Hit: 5 Stars

I've played through Halo 3 all the way up to legendary, and after playing the game that many times, I had to buy the soundtrack. It is absolutely amazing. I'm a big fan of movie scores, but this is my first video game soundtrack. The songs are exactly like they are in the game. This soundtrack makes great driving music. Unlike most of the people who posted reviews about this soundtrack, I did like the bonus song on the second CD. It makes me think Red vs. Blue every time I hear it. Maybe the people who didn't like that song would like it more if they watched RvB. At any rate, O'Donnell and Salvatori created a musical masterpiece with this soundtrack, a must-have for anyone who loves Halo. There is a theme at the beginning of the second CD that the composers called 'Leonidas Returns', a great allusion to the ancient Spartans of Greece, and a perfect comparison between John (Master Chief) and Leonidas. It is a very dynamic theme that fits Master Chief perfectly, and moves the game along extremely well. The Flood tracks, and especially the track sub-titled 'Gravemind' are all effectively creepy and easily bring pictures of parasitic Flood ticks to mind. 5 stars plus 5!

Free Music Review: Bigger and Bolder
Hit: 5 Stars

Having played Halo 1 and 2 for more hours than I can possibly count, I found the score for each title sticking with me. While the second entry in the series departed a bit more into chaotic guitar-rock, the soundtrack for Halo 3 truly puts the score back on an even footing. Much like the score for Halo 1, It balances the light ambient vocal style of Halo's best musical themes with the rallying martial style of drumbeats, horns and cadences.

Translating a videogame score to a formal soundtrack is difficult: each piece is designed to flow with gameplay, loop as needed, and perhaps switch back and forth. The 2-disc set of the Halo 3 soundtrack is a well-organized package: passages flow into each other smoothly, it sprawls across two discs, and we don't have any pieces that feel like 'trimmed snippets' or jumbled remnants: what is essentially background music has been given the full treatment here.

If you enjoy the music of Halo and feel the same about the game Halo 3, you will enjoy the Halo 3 Original Soundtrack. It makes great music for work, driving, or just kicked-back listening, and I'm very glad I purchased it.

Free Music Review: So good!
Hit: 5 Stars

This soundtrack is amazing. I've been a Halo fan since the beginning. I've loved the music as well. When I first played through Halo 3 I loved every second of it and the music really stood out to me. I couldn't wait to get the soundtrack. I had to wait whole month! Oh well, I got to listen to my Halo and Halo 2 scores a bunch in the mean time. Well I finally got it yesterday. Every bit of music from the game is on the two discs. They've been arranged into concert suites like the previous Halo scores. Like another reviewer on here said if you've played through Halo 3 you can listen to the score and close your eyes and relive the adventure. Or if you haven't played the game, the music stands alone and is very enjoyable. I think track 12 is my favorite, and was also my favorite part of the game, story wise as they land on the Ark. It reminded me of when they landed on the original Halo in the first game. The mystery and excitement was all there and the music perfectly orchestrates that moment. Anyways, great score and well worth the money for 2 hours of music! Even the music from the game menus is on the CD.
