This is the most boring, wooden, uninspired, and all-around terrible performance of this piece ever recorded (well, not really - there are much worse - but you get the point, anyway). If you're looking for a good performance of Handel's masterpiece, try one of the following:
"Period" Performances -
- John Eliot Gardiner w/ Baroque Soloists & Monteverdi Choir (Philips) $34.75; over-priced, but probably the best (according to the critics...) "historically informed" version around
- Trevor Pinnock w/ English Concert & Choir (Archiv) $33.98; also overpriced, but still very good (my personal favorite among the period performances)
"Romanticized" Performances
- Pretty much any of Beecham's recordings (I've heard that Klemperer's was good too, but have not been able to find it; is out of print).
"In-Between" Performances
- Robert Shaw w/ Robert Shaw Chorale & Orchestra (RCA) $16.99; still considered by many to be THE definitive performance of this work
- Sir Colin Davis w/ the London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus (Philips) $14.99; another standard (really), and very reasonably priced
- Richard Westenburg w/ Musica Sacra (RCA) $23.98; my all-time favorite recording of Messiah, with wonderful soloists, a fantastic chorus, and everything one could want from this music (except the repeat in the overture...oh well...)
Any and all of these performances are well worth their price tags (with the possible exception of the first...).
The Scholars Baroque Ensemble should be paying us.
