Free Music Notes for Sweep the LegFree Music Review: 3 1/2 Stars for the sophmore effort... Hit: 3 StarsListening to the garbage on the radio these days, this cd deserves 5 stars...However, comparing it to other indie releases shows some definite flaws...The album seems rushed with some misdirection thrown in for good measure...The flows are tight, but the beats are a bit unsavory at times...this almost sounds like a b-sides version of the multi-platinum album...All is not bad though and if you like Hangar, or spaced out synth beats...or you are looking for something new...this might be for you...a solid release nonetheless. Peace.
Free Music Review: 3-1/2 stars -- Def Juxtaposition Hit: 3 StarsHangar 18 is another collective that I was introduced to on HipHopSite. And since I was impressed by most of the material from people on the Def Jux roster, I decided to listen to their latest album, Sweep the Leg.
I can't quite tell the difference between the three members' voices yet, but that's not too big of an issue because they all can spit pretty well. Standouts include "That I Know I Want", "Feet to Feet", and "Watchyoself". The necessary honey-sings-the-chorus track "Really Wide" is also good.
However, at the end of the album is a handful of questionable songs. With the exception of "Room to Breathe", the last few tracks are pretty skippable, especially when the guys start speed-rapping with okay results (see "Bakin Soda" and "Last Stop"). "Think Big" suffers from a childish chorus, and Slug can't even save "Dance with Me" (but what are Def Jux artists doing making a shake-that-ass song anyway?).
Still, Sweep the Leg is solid enough to help the guys in Hangar 18 take flight.
