Free Music Notes for The Unreleased Recordings

Free Music Review: Hank Williams, The unreleased recordings.
Hit: 5 Stars

What a great collection of Hank Williams recordings this is. Truely sensational. It defies belief that these songs were retrieved from a dumpster bin ... why was no-one arrested for crimes against musical history.
The gems found in this collection are many and Hanks' traditional renditions of "On top of old Smokey" and "When the saints go marching in," are just fantastic.
This collection has it all with Hanks's relaxed comments and humour. The recordings are of an unbelievably high standard and we are so blessed to have them available to us.
Just to think that these recordings were tossed out makes me so mad. I am wondering what else these cretans have discarded in the past.

Any fans of Hanks (and of just great music) needs to buy this collection to hear Hank at his best. You will not be dissappointed.

Free Music Review: Required Listening
Hit: 5 Stars

Other's have already described the set, so I'll just toss in some minor points. They do sound much better than the previously circulated bootlegs. A lot of work has gone into declicking and such. Also, these are not exact show-by-show copies. Much of the talk has been deleted so it's much more like listening to a new album rather than a radio show. For repeated listenings, this is probably a wise move. When playing the bootleg set, you may quickly tire of hearing the theme song over and over along with the sales pitch for Mother's Best Flour. Eventually, I believe they will also release the recordings in that form, but this version is likely more to the liking of the general public. Also, I believe additional volumes are to follow that are in the same format as this set. So, keep your eye out for Volume 2, etc. Great stuff! Get it now!!

Free Music Review: Worth waiting a lifetime
Hit: 5 Stars

I believe it was a wise decision not to release the full radio shows at this time. I pondered quite a bit before the release of how the critics and new listeners would react to the Audrey singles. She sounds even more horrible in these digital works then in the old masters. This release focuses on Hanks vocals with just enough talk to put us there in total wonder. The sound quality is nothing less then amazing. I am just disappointed Hank did not do more of his standards of the day, but some of these songs he did are the heart and sole of the traditional culture of the time. For that this collection is a historical find that gives us a unexpected glince into a long gone time. Most of all the clarity is so good you can almost hear Hank's breath. It's stunning in how Hank gave his all in what he knew aired as a very early morning radio show.

Free Music Review: The missing Hank.
Hit: 5 Stars

These three discs are a must if you are a fan of Hank Williams. Even if you own the Complete Hank Williams set I recommend you buy this set as well. Here we hear Hank in his prime singing many of his own songs as well as songs by other writers. The quality is excellent and a booklet is included giving the background to the recordings. This first set has less of Hank talking than the second set (Hank Williams Revealed), but personally I prefer that - I just like to here Hank singing as only he can. Incidentally, if you do enjoy Hank's homespun comments, you should also consider The Health and Happiness Shows boxed set, which I can strongly recommend, partly because we get to hear Jerry Rivers playing bursts of old fiddle songs, which Hank obviously appreciates. If you do buy this three disc set, you won't be disappointed.

Free Music Review: Hank Williams at his BEST.
Hit: 5 Stars

These recordings reveal the real Hank, as his fans heard him on the radio, as he was in life. I take nothing from Fred Rose, but as I noticed with the Health and Happiness Shows, Hank sounded better and more into the music than on his MGM studio recordings.
I have heard the complete Mother's Best radio shows, and they are a jewel, but they do have sound quality issues. The person responsible for cleaning these songs up for this release has done a great job.
I can happily recommend "The Unreleased Recordings" to any current or future Hank Williams fan.
All of us Hank fans eagerly await the release of the remaining songs. Maybe, just maybe, they'll treat us to the complete shows at some future date. Until then, I'll listen to these CD's over and over. Thanks to TimeLife, and thanks to Luke the Drifter.
