Free Music Review: This album rocks!

Want to hear some new, diverse rock music? This Time Around might be a great choice. 13 full tracks, and a great deal for your money!Hanson's second album is one of the best albums you could find, by performers of any age. Then when you realize that all the songs were written and played by teenagers, not even old enough to vote or drink, it is astounding!The songs vary greatly, in tempo, flavor and lyrics. There is a dash of everything on the album - from soulful ballads (Save Me), to the salsa flavored upbeat "Can't Stop", to clever lyrics (Sure About It), and intensely loud rockers (In The City).The songs are mature, and well-crafted musically, but they are also graced with Hanson's incredible voices and harmonies. All three Hansons can SING! Any one of them is capable of being a lead singer on his own, but all THREE of them together, is just extraordinary.Every track on this album is strong, and different from all the others. There is not a weak song here. It is also great to sing along to these tunes!1) You Never Know - a great beginning song that's upbeat, and grabs your attention right away, with their opening three part harmonies, and pounding rhythm. Clever lyrics, ("I've got my gun but I am low on ammunition, I'm like a book that's waiting to be read") and an addictive hook. Taylor's voice is incredibly raspy and soulful here, and Ike's guitar solo is driving and powerful.2) If Only - a door opens, you hear a haunting harmonica riff (by John Popper), which draws you in immediately. From the opening "cause I need you", this song captures your attention, with its great beat, and full sound. The lyrics are more than your usual pop love song ("there's a picture that I've taken in the back of my head" - and the hook "If only I had the guts to feel this way"). Hanson's lyrics really make you think. There is a STOP towards the end that is just fantastic! I really like this tune.3) This Time Around - The first US single. What's sad is that the content of the song and the video did not seem to coincide, and may have given people the wrong impression about the entire album. The song is deep, and tells a story, however the video seems to have no real point, and looks like a party. Very powerful lyrics -"and we won't go down" and, "all I know is that fear has got to go, this time around". Taylor's voice is amazingly soulful, and the chorus is incredibly catchy, with an excellent guitar part.4) Runaway Run - my least favorite song on the album, but still good. The opening "and I waited for you" draws you in. The beat is uptempo, and the vocals are again, flawless. The chorus is a bit too "pop" for my taste, though. Otherwise, a good song.5) Save Me - maybe my favorite. This ballad is so soulful, I can't say enough good things about it! From the opening "Lovin' you", I was hooked! Taylor's voice is ASTOUNDING here! The lyric, "won't you save me, saving's what I need" just grabs my heart. Excellent hand drums here, too.6) Dying to Be Alive - another deep song. Opening with piano, and Taylor's amazing voice. Clever title, and lyrics, "let's not go through our lives, without just dying to be alive". A moving song, with Rose Stone's choir adding vocal fullness. The ending vocal part, "we all come tumbling down..." is fantastic.7) Can't Stop - really upbeat, a great dance tune. Another favorite. This has a latin flavor with many stops and whistles that add excitement to this rocker. I love the part when they whisper, "tick tock tick tock goes the clock, not a second passes, I can't stop".8) I Wish That I Was There - Zac sounds great here. Another favorite. A love song with a hook that is great fun to sing along to. Very catchy beat, harmonies and lyrics.9) Love Song - Ike is a master of the ballad. Slow and sweet, with a great keyboard part, and good harmonies. Musically this is very full.10) Sure About It - I love this song. From the beginning "whoa oh - I'm definitely sure that I'm not sure", this song is so clever. Tay's voice is excellent here.11) Hand in Hand - goes through many changes - from just guitar and shakers, and a ballad feel, to intense rocker at the end. Ike sounds great here. Excellent music on this one...and the stop, where they sing "oh yeah, say goodbye" is terrific.12) In the City - WOW! This song kicks it! From the opening guitar riff, this song doesn't quit! My fave! This song ROCKS! If you didn1t know, you would NEVER guess - it was Hanson!13) Song to Sing - this ballad is amazing! Great lyrics, incredible vocals, I LOVE THIS SONG! Can't hear it enough! Great ending to an amazing album!MMMBop was both a blessing and a curse for Hanson. It brought them world-wide recognition, huge "first" album sales, and a reputation for being a bubble-gum pop band, manufactured by the industry.If you think you know their music, just from having heard that one song, please think again! This album is NOTHING like MMMBop - it is diverse, and a departure from their previous work.Somehow people think Hanson deserves ridicule. They're not who most people think they are! They are genuine rock musicians!Critics loved this album.Many famous musicians have openly spoken about how talented they think Hanson is - including Stevie Nicks, Ringo Starr and the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir.I would encourage anyone that has a preconceived notion of who they think Hanson is, and what their music sounds like, to give this album a listen.If you like The Beatles, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller, CSNY, etc., then you will REALLY enjoy this album!
