I suppose I'll add my voice to the chorus of "older" Hanson fans. I'm a 29-year-old woman who's not really interested in a lot of what's on the radio today (my favorite musician is Ani Difranco, for God's sake), but do I love this CD.I didn't think much about Hanson one way or the other until I saw them on the Grammys back in . . . it must have been 1998. That performance made it clear how talented they are. Other live performances on talk shows and MTV's Live at the 10 Spot further converted me. However, I didn't buy "This Time Around" until I started hearing "If Only" on the radio. I loved its lyrics and irresistible catchiness, and I wasn't hearing it often enough to suit me, so I bought the CD. I haven't been disappointed. My favorite song is "Sure About It," another catchy one with lyrics I wish I had written (and I don't say that often). The vocals are just amazing throughout, particularly on "Save Me" and "Song to Sing." The harmonies are great, and the musicianship and lyrics, always pretty good, are better than ever. I noticed a few people lamenting the fact that this album hasn't sold as well as those of 'N Sync, Britney Spears, etc. Maybe a fruitful comparison is with all the bands of the '50s and '60s that drove teenagers crazy. Most of those faded into oblivion, but a couple went on to make albums like "Pet Sounds" and "Sgt. Pepper's." Hanson gets my vote as being most likely to fall into this latter category.
Free Music Review: This time around they are here for good! Hit: 5 Stars
Being a huge fan of both pop and rock music, this album is one of my favorites! I have believed in Hanson's talent since they came out in 1997, but this album totally solidifies my love for them! Now this is not the best album I've ever heard in my life or anything, but it is definatly an album that you should all buy! There is a song for everyone on it. It has a mixture of upbeat jammin' songs like "You never know," and "This time around," (only to mention a few) and spine chilling ballads like "Love song" and "A song to sing." My favorites are probably "Save me" and "Dying to be alive." The lyrics are meaningful and so much more sofisticated and diverse than any other teen acts out there (not to mention any) and they are REAL. They do not lipsync, they write their own music and lyrics, they play their own instruments, they produce and arange, and their voices are not digitally inhanced. I am so disapointed that the album is not doing so well, it is a shame that the teen market is so fickle, if only people were not blinded by Britney Spears' and Nsync's dance routines and fakeness. Hanson are true artists, no matter what anyone says, even if you don't totally love this album, I'm sure you will agree that it is a good one, I don't think anyone can deny that. Just watch and see, in a few years when Britney and Nsync start to get wrinkles and lose their song writers, Hanson will be the ones rocking it! Hanson, I love you guys! Keep rocking!
Free Music Review: Excellent album... Hit: 5 Stars
I really enjoy this album. Not one song is the same, yet they all carry the Hanson trademark of excellence. The album is so diverse, I'm sure that someone will at least appreciate one song if not more.1. You Never Know - Great opener & has a 70s feel to it 2. If Only - Such a fun song w/ excellent harmonica playing 3. This Time Around - Superb anthemic tune. Very triumphant 4. Runaway Run - A destined hit 5. Save Me - A spine tingling ballad. The lead singer displays so much soul in his voice on this track 6. Dying to Be Alive - A gospel-y song that features a full choir. The music and the lyrics are definintely very inspirational 7. Can't Stop - A funky, toe-tapping track, flavored with some Latin vibes 8. Wish That I Was There - Wow, talk about voice change. The youngest one could now be mistaken as one of his brothers. 9. Love Song - Such a heart-felt song. 10. Sure About It - Another funky ditty. Great use of creative imagery in the lyrics. 11. Hand In Hand - One of my favorite songs. The older brother displays a lot of anger and pain when he sings this song. It's amazing. 12. In The City - This is the song that will get the reaction "This is HANSON?" Total rocking tune 13. A Song To Sing - Excellent closer. Piano driven song with a melody and lyrics that make you want to cry. It's funny how a bunch of teenagers are so experienced at evoking one's emotions. Great Album...listen for yourself
Free Music Review: Don't be afraid!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Don't let their pretty faces fool you...these guys can seriously rock. This bluesy-rock album showcases what true rockers are all about: the music. Every time I mention Hanson or hear someone else mention their name, all that pops up in everyone elses' mind is 'MMMBop', now I didn't want to bring that up but seriously, these guys are way beyond MMMBop. It's sad and disappointing to me that some people would completely ignore and push them away because of that. It's been a couple of years and yes, this album is fairly old now but the sound is still new. Every song on this album is a gem. It's not POP! The opener 'You Never Know' is now a Hanson classic. 'If Only' is a gutsy love song. 'This Time Around' showcases how well they've grown as songwriters. The list goes on and on. If you ever hear one song for the rest of this year, listen to 'Save Me'. The last song, 'A Song To Sing' is also a beautifully written song that highlights Taylor's vocal ability. In all, I think people should give the preteen Hanson 'MMMBop' up and concentrate on who they've grown up to be. Real rockers. My personal favourites: Save Me, You Never Know, Runaway Run and In The City. By the way, I am in no way bashing Middle of Nowhere, in fact, I recommend the album to anyone. 'MMMBop' is in my opinion their worst song but none of the other songs on the album are similar in any way. Check it out before you critize them as singer/song-writers.
Free Music Review: I can't wait for their next one! Hit: 5 Stars
Hanson has said that this CD was supposed to act almost as a transition between "Middle of Nowhere" and their upcoming CD. "Middle of Nowhere" is a great CD, and it came at a time before *NSync and BSB and all of them. It is true pop, free from all the digital influences. But, Hanson has matured since then, and this CD is proof of it. While many of their songs are still about love, one can see the progression. And hopefully, their next CD will take this even further. Some of my personal favorites from TTA are "A Song To Sing", "This Time Around", "Runaway Run", and "In The City." Both the title track and "A Song To Sing" show off their voices and musical abilities. If you don't like Hanson because of "MMMBop", you should know that this CD is not bubblegum pop, and it is much more grown-up than "Middle of Nowhere." And even if you don't like Hanson, they deserve a lot of respect, because they wrote all of their songs, co-produced the album, and play all of their own insturments, and they're not even 20 yet. This CD does a great job of showing off Hanson's true abilities as musicians. It is unfortunate that they are still judged as being a teeny-bopper boy-band, because this CD is so much more than that. Hopefully they will only continue to grow as musicians and their next CD will be even better (if that's possible).
