This Eric package concentrates on the "lost" hits that chronicle the emergence and final domination of rock-oriented 45s on the Billboard charts in the Late Fifties. The sign that rock was a trend that had to be dealt with is represented by established songstress Kay Starr with her take on the "old and new" in the #1 ballad "The Rock And Roll Waltz." From this fine beginning, many aspects of this teen-based and teen-aimed music are explored from the sly but cute "Sittin' In The Balcony"/Eddie Cochran, to the more "grown-up" sound of "Start Movin' In My Direction"/Sal Mineo and "A White Sport Coat"/Marty Robbins, to reworked standards such as "Midnight Special"/Paul Evans and "Lavender Blue"/Sammy Turner, to the teen lament "Three Stars"/Tommy Dee, a tribute record to Holly/Valens/Bopper.Some sophisticated major label R&B-tinged sides spice this package-from the lush "Deep Purple"/Billy Ward & His Dominoes, to the classy "For Your Love"/Ed Townsend, to Jesse Belvin's career triumph with "Guess Who." These platters nicely contrast the teen love themes presented with "A Teenage Prayer"/Gloria Mann, the starkly bleak "Tragedy"/Thomas Wayne and the classically edged "I've Come Of Age"/Billy Storm. There's even a bit of Conway Twitty influenced rockabilly heartache with the almost forgotten gem "Lonely For You"/Gary Stites.
Besides the rare stereo Stites inclusion, "I've Had It"/Bell Notes, "It Was I"/Skip & Flip and "Lonely Boy"/Paul Anka are three other stereo rarities that shouldn't be missed!
Occasional records of foreign pedigree made the charts during the period as well and two #1 efforts included here have been strangely overlooked until now. They are "Volare"/Domenico Modugno and "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands"/Laurie London, with the latter being the first UK entry to go to the top of the American charts during the Rock Era. As usual with Eric releases, the mastering and attention to detail are superb and virtually everything in the disc is from original tape sources.
