Free Music Notes for Gold Medal CollectionFree Music Review: Harry Chapin's best album Hit: 5 Stars
This has some of Harry Chapin's best songs like "The Rock", "WOLD", "Cat's in the Cradle", and "Danceband on the Titanic". "The Rock" is about a town that has a rock perched over it. A little boy senses that it will fall. Can he warn the townspeople in time? Is he just a crazy boy? Find out by listening. "WOLD" is about a morning DJ on the radio station WOLD. He must travel a lot, and doesn't always have time for his family. This melody is undescribable. In this live singing, Tom Chapin has a small solo part. "Cat's in the Cradle" has a real 80's beat to it. It's about a father who only cares about business. He keeps on promising his son they'll get together soon, but they never do. The son just smiles and has faith in his father. "Danceband on the Titanic" is a swingy song that sounds like a real danceband on a ship is singing it. It tells the story of the sinking of the Titanic from the danceband's point of view.
Free Music Review: A Great Story Telling Folk Singer. RIP Mr. Chapin Hit: 5 Stars
Harry Chapin was a rare singer and songwriter who broke out of the categories that most artists are placed in . This guy was a wonderful storyteller in his songs which spoke of love, heartache and the everyday man. This album contains the Classsic "Cat's In The Cradle" which is about a man who realizes that his time with his son has quickly faded away which he laments greatly. Sadly Mr. Chapin was killed in a car accident on his way to perform at a concert and the world lost a great talented musician and songwriter. Mr. Chapin was also very modest about his performing . I once heard him say that having an orchestra playing behind him was like "putting hot mag wheels on a Rolls Royce" or words to that effect. RIP Harry. You are sadly missed. Perhaps you and Roy Orbison are now lending your voices and musical talents to the Angel's Choir in Heaven. I hope so.
Free Music Review: A must have for any music lover Hit: 5 Stars
Having been a fan of this entertaining and talented story teller since my first exposure to Chapin's music, I purchased the CD with great anticipation. Once again, Harry exceeded my expectations and further solidified my love for his messages and his music. I had never heard "Corey's Coming" prior to this and after listening to it the first time, I found myself hitting the repeat button, time and time again. The lyrics coupled with the emotion in his voice sent shivers down my spine. Harry did it again, finding a way to draw you into his story as opposed to just listening to a song. The entire CD package is just another example of how wrong people are when they say the Good Lord took Harry from us too soon. I just think God wanted him performing Center Stage-in person, for him. God Bless, Harry-you will live forever in our hearts
Free Music Review: What the hell happened to Circle? Hit: 5 Stars
Almost all of Harry's stuff gets five stars from me, but what the hell happened to the 7:30 live version of Circle, that used to appear only on this CD?
Here it says it was replaced by the 3:35 studio version, which can easily be found elsewhere.
I thought that live version was the best recording he'd ever done. He got into a long monologue about World Hunger Year, and about how he did most of his concerts as benefits, his brothers, and Yvonne, take turns singing lines, and the audience just ate it up.
Now that's gone?!
The ISBN of my 1988 Elektra/Asylum CD which has this version is 0 7559-60773-2 3.
Do yourselves a favor and see if this is indeed what you'll be getting before you order. I just can't believe this was taken off!
Free Music Review: Timeless messages. Hit: 5 Stars
As a substitute teacher in a high school English class I shared some bits of Harry's music and wisdom (world hunger and other pertinent issues) from this collection with my students who found the poetry they were studying "boring." The bell rang for lunch in the middle of our discussion and not one student jumped up to leave. In a Grade Six class the deal was that I would listen to "their" music if they would listen to mine. It was phenomenal to see the way a group of twelve year olds tuned in and turned on to who they initially thought was "just some old guy from way back in the seventies." They asked me to bring more the next day so I arrived with "Greatest Stories," another hit. New Harry fans! Cool!
