Free Music Notes for Oh, My NolaFree Music Review: A classy salute to the city of New Orleans! Hit: 5 Stars
I have always been fascinated with the rich musical history of New Orleans. Native son, Harry Connick Jr. pays tribute to this rich musical legacy with this outstanding representation of the city's heritage. He features old classics like "Bill Bailey" (done in a classy style that reminds me of Count Basie's big band sound), the Lee Dorsey classic "Workin In a coal mine" really kicks butt, "Yes we can can"...
makes me want to join the Mardi Gras parade, the bluesy "Someday" is fascinating etc. etc. There really isn't a bad cut on this album. Mr. Connick is a master musician/arranger and singer and he's made himself a classic album. Buy it and you won't regret it.
Free Music Review: Oh, My Nola, Harry Connick, Jr. CD Hit: 5 Stars
This was my 1st Harry Connick, Jr. CD--recommended, no less, by my 95 y/o mother who lived in New Orleans all her life until Katrina. I was born and raised in New Orleans, but moved away after college; the whole album is such a great mix of New Orleans sound--jazz, blues (Harry Connick,Jr style), soulful pop, spiritual, big band, honky-tonk piano, etc. You name it, it's there. Thank God for iTunes and the computer and iPods, because I think I'm going to wear this one out! I get tears in my eyes everytime I hear "All These People". Because of this album, I've bought more of his CD's---but this one is my favorite.
Free Music Review: The Best From Harry! Hit: 5 Stars
How could you not adore this CD? Every single track just gets you movin', keeps you smilin'. "All These People" especially piqued my interest. Mr. Connick made a wonderful arrangement by adding Kim Burrell. Both lyrics and music in this track, I think, really capture the essence of what so many were going through.
Can't say which is my fav so far; they're all so equally great. Love how Connick evokes so many different genres within these songs! Love him even more for throwing in a man's take on Bill Bailey.
Truly a jambalaya bowl full of 'Nawlins, this CD can't be beat.
Free Music Review: Love Letter from a Native Son Hit: 5 Stars
Pure New Orleans -- these songs are obviously well loved and carefully selected. The originals stand up to the standards, particularly where "Yes We Can Can" follows "All These People," which I downloaded as soon as it hit iTunes last year. Nobody has expressed his anger at the post-storm pathos more elegantly than Harry, and no one has proved a more passionate advocate for the city and its people. Vive la Nouvelle Orleans! I want to be eating gumbo and etouffee and shrimp salad somewhere between Magazine and St. Charles every time I hear these songs!
Free Music Review: My oh my, We make a lot of Love! This is the BEST! Hit: 5 Stars
I cannot stop playing: We Make A lot of Love, Someday, Sheik of Araby, Elijah Rock, Something You Got, never a dull moment on this CD. I am long time fan and I love this. Great arrangements, great band. He is in excellent voice and his chops on the piano! This is what makes me buy his stuff on sight. Thanks to very interesting liner notes which gives the listener insight to each track. It's funky, jazzy, bluesy and all together soulful. Check out his very interesting duet with gospel artist, Kim Burrell!
