Free Music Review: Harry Nilsson's Classic Finally Gets Remastered!
Hit: 5 Stars

In 1971, singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson released the album entitled "Nilsson Schmilsson", and what many consider to be his best work. The smash hit "Without You" (written by Pete Ham & Tom Evans of Badfinger) was the album's first hit and it went straight to number one on the pop and adult contemperary charts. But the album also spawned several other hits as well with the reggaeish tune "Coconut" and the frantic rocker "Jump Into The Fire". The musicians on "Nilsson Schmilsson" are first rate with artists such as Jim Gordon (drummer for Derek & The Dominos), Klaus Voorman (played bass guitar on John Lennon's "Imagine" album), Chris Spedding (an accomplished guitarist) and Gary Wright (keyboardist for Spooky Tooth) all adding their two bits on this excellent album. The songs are full of pop tunes such as "Gotta Get Up", "Driving Along", "Coconut" and the seven minute rock classic "Jump Into The Fire". You've got ballads here such as the above mentioned "Without You" and "I'll Never Leave You". There are also six bonus tracks included in this newly remastered version such as "Si No Estas Tu" (Spanish Version Of "Without You"), "How Can I Be Sure", "The Moonbeam Song (Demo Version)", "Lamaze", "Old Forgotten Soldier (Demo Version" and "Gotta Get Up (Demo Version)". The remastering is excellent and certainly surpasses the non-remastered version with increased mid-range, bass and extended output. Ranked in the Top 100 albums of all time, "Nilsson Schmilsson" certainly has earned it's rightful place and is an album all lovers of seventies music should have in their collection.

Free Music Review: classic pop
Hit: 5 Stars

Every once in a great while, an album comes along that can truly be described as one of the quintessential pop albums. Newly remastered and reissued, Nilsson Schmilsson is one of those albums. While it doesn't contain all of the bonus tracks found on the recent Canadian issue, the new US version sounds great. The songs ("Without You," "Coconut," "Jump into the Fire," "The Moonbeam Song" and all the others) speak for themselves. The original artwork has been retained, and the overall package has been spruced up with 6 bonus tracks, loads of rare photos and new liner notes.

For those who already own a copy (or copies) of the album, the draw will be the bonus tracks. Unfortunately, after hearing most of them, it's fairly obvious why they were left off in the first place. "Si No Estas Tu" (the Spanish version of "Without You") is nice for a 'novelty' item, but it just doesn't work. Harry's vocal and phrasing aren't up to par, and he actually goes back to singing the second chorus in English. Demo versions of "The Moonbeam Song" and "Gotta Get Up" are interesting, as are the 'hidden' radio spots at the end of the CD. The icing on the cake for longtime fans of the album would have been to include some of the material from the quad mix (all of the songs are noticeably different).

All said, Nilsson Schmilsson remains one of the greatest pop albums ever recorded - with or without the bonus tracks.

Free Music Review: Finally, a definitive version!
Hit: 5 Stars

This beautiful album has not recieved the love and affection it deserves throughout the years. There have been numerous CD releases and all (except for the $30 Mobile Fidelity gold CD) have woefully inadequate fidelity due to incompetent mastering jobs and/or poor source material.

The Camden import CD series were taken from cassette quality tape dubs and mastered for that "You aren't there" sound. The recent Japan remasters sound fine but have that very annoying digital hiss removal which destroyed the transients and made things sound like MP3's. Grrrrr!

This CD version was mastered from the original tapes by Vic Anesini. Vic's name is usually the mark of quality. You can buy with confindence when you see his name. He's made this album sound right... finally. It's not as top ended as the MFSL gold CD but that disc was sourced from Richard Perry's personal tapes and not the original masters. Vic has made some wise EQ choices and things sound smooth, natural and pleasing.

The bonus tracks are nice although all have been released before on various discs.

Again, buy with confidence. This is a wonderful album needing a place in everyone's music library.

Free Music Review: What a tremendous album!
Hit: 5 Stars

I remember buying this LP record when I was very young because it had three radio hits: "Without You", "Coconut", and "Jump Into The Fire" - three great but completely different sounding songs. It was the thinnest record I had ever bought, extremely flexible. The label said something about RCA Flexidisc or something, but I digress...

Nilsson Schmilsson seems laid back, fun and accessible from the first note of "Gotta Get Up", even while Harry's complaining about having to get out of bed and start his day! Every song on the original album is great, and it's all over the place musically, from pop to rock to blues to 50s covers to ballads. Harry's voice is amazing, and the musicians are superb studio guys (Jim Keltner, Klaus Voorman, Chris Spedding, etc.) The lyrics are great and immediately accessible. All this plus remastering and extra tracks? Absolutely!!

Nilsson was an underrated singer and composer, and to me this is his masterpiece. Son Of Schmilsson is great too ("Spaceman", "You're Breaking My Heart" (a.k.a the F.U. song) and features some hysterical lyrics.

Free Music Review: This is probably the greatest pop album ever made!
Hit: 5 Stars

Every song on this CD could have easily been a Top Ten Hit on radio. This man was a genius! The hits "Without You", "Coconut", and "Jump Into the Fire" are the main hits of this CD. But, most of his non-hits on this album are what makes this album such a great "feel good" record to listen to.

His beautiful melodic "Moonbeam Song", His "Gotta Get Up" which anyone can relate to even to this day, "Down" - what a great high energy mood track this is, and "Early In the Morning" - pleasantly bluesy. I can't think of one track here that is undesirable in any way.

I sure wish somebody would put together a DVD repertoire on "Harry Nilsson". Even every member of The Beatles thought that he was a genius.

More of today's artists need to give this album a whirl. Perhaps they'd learn something, because nothing recorded in the past 20 years seems to have any emotional staying power that continues to be cherished for many years to come. Today's music is dead and forgotten the moment it leaves Billboard's pop charts.
