Free Music Notes for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]Free Music Review: Excellent addition to the 'Harry Potter' collection! Hit: 5 Stars
While this soundtrack may not be the best 'Potter' soundtrack, it is a very good one. A lot of the tracks are very memorable and a lot of "victory" seqences are used.
1. The Story Continues- A nice little intro song that tells the audience that this movie is definately going to be darker and scarier than the other three. But then it reminds them that it is a Harry Potter movie by playing "Hedwig's Theme" at one point.
2. Frank Dies- Not an excellent song, but a good starter to a darker film. This is where the audience finds out that they are definately in a good surprise because of the darkness and fright in this film.
3. The Quidditch World Cup- One of my FAVORITE songs on the whole CD. It starts off introducing the Irish team by playing light and happy Irish music. Then, it suddenly turns to the darker Bulgarian music. Both teams themes blend magnificently and makes this one a stand-out song on the soundtrack.
4. The Dark Mark- A good, scary action sequence song. Not very much, but it really foreshadows the return of Voldemort, which is always good. A kind of lead-up to the Voldemort track at the end.
5. Foreign Visitors Arrive- The second time Hedwig's Theme makes an appearance. This is also an AWESOME song on the CD. It starts with Hedwig's Theme and then it turns into the girlish style of Beauxbaton's arrival, which fits in with Beauxbaton's students. Then the dark and manly style of Durmstrang's arrival, which also fits in nicely with Durmstrang students.
6. The Goblet of Fire- This song is very well done, and has very nice sequences when the champions from each school get selected. There's the Viktor Krum sequence, the Fleur Delacour sequence, and then the Cedric Diggory sequence. And then, the song takes a dramatic turn when the Harry Potter sequence appears and it stays at that dark style for the rest of the song.
7. Rita Skeeter- A very happy, bouncy, perky, bubbly song that really introduces the bouncy, perky, and bubbly character of Rita Skeeter. Right away, this song reminded me of the "Gilderoy Lockhart" song on the "Chamber of Secrets" soundtrack. A nice little song to lighten the mood on this CD.
8. Sirius Fire- A good, dark, mysterious, dramatic song to kind of remind us of who Sirius Black is.
9. Harry Sees Dragons- Again, this is a nice, dark and mysterious song when Harry sees the dragons for the First Task. A nice little theme for Hagrid and Madame Maxime appears very soon in the song, and then the big climatic ending when the dragons appear and it's a good lead-up to the next song.
10. Golden Egg- My all-time FAVORITE song on the CD!! The big, booming introduction feels like it's introducing us to the Triwizard Tournament. It immediately turns to a dark action song between Harry and the Hungarian Horntail that he has to battle. At the end is one of those "victory songs", which is very prominent in this particular piece. Very well done.
11. Neville's Waltz- A waltz, basically, that's all it is. It introduces us to the Yule Ball that would be happening during Christmas. Not the greatest, but also lightens the mood of the CD.
12. Harry in Winter- Another one of my favorites! It's kind of a more "romantic" rendition of "A Window to the Past" from "Prisoner of Azkaban". It really captures the mood of the interactions between Harry and Cho.
13. Potter Waltz- Like Neville's Waltz, it's just a waltz. Not that great, but it is kind of the main "Yule Ball" theme.
14. Underwater Secrets- A nice little bubbly song that, apart from leading up to the Second Task, reintroduces us to Moaning Myrtle. The song finishes with a beautiful choral song of the secret in the golden egg.
15. The Black Lake- Another one of my favorites songs! This is the Second Task's theme. Unlike "Golden Egg", this starts off very dark and dramatic, then speeds up to a great underwater race. This song has an amazing middle part at the beginning of the second minute of the song. This song also ends with a smaller, less obvious "victory song", however, like the movie and book, the victory song is less prominent because the tasks are becoming harder to defeat.
16. Hogwarts' March- A nice little bouncy march that plays at the beginning of the Third Task. The only thing I don't like about this song is that AWESOME bass drum boom in the film during this song. That really gets me excited for the Third Task, which is one of the scarier scenes in the movie.
17. The Maze- The Third Task's theme, and another one of my favorite. You can tell that this song is going to be scary just by listening to the first minute of the song. You can really sense the difficulty and scariness of this task in this song. Towards the end, there's a nice little "chase" song between Harry and Cedric, which is one reason why this song is one of my favorites.
18. Voldemort- The LONGEST song on the soundtrack. This is one of the darkest and scariest songs on the CD. But, it's also one of the best and one of the stand-out songs. You get so used to the dark tones and the scariness of the song that you kind of get pleasantly surprised by the SPECTACULAR ending of the song. The song ends with the "Priori Incantatem" sequence in the film, which is a very sad, very powerful rendition of "Harry in Winter". Hearing this song while watching the scene is VERY emotional.
19. Death of Cedric- One of the most moving songs on the CD. This is also one of the best. It's high strings playing a kind of funeral song, while the lower voices do a very, very, very sad version of "Harry in Winter". Like the Voldemort song, watching this scene with this music actually made me start to cry a little. This is a very emotional and sad song, which fits in perfectly in the scene. You really start to feel for Amos Diggory and this song reflects how Amos and Hogwarts (as well as Beauxbatons and Durmstrang) students and teachers feel after the deadly third task. This song is another one of my favorites, and I still get teary-eyed when I hear this song.
20. Another Year Ends- Another great song, it is about Beauxbatons and Durmstrang leaving Hogwarts and going back to their home countries. It has the students and teachers of all three schools saying goodbye to their foreign friends, as well as their classmates. It's an excellent closing song.
21. Hogwarts' Hymn- A BEAUTIFUL closing song which is kind of like the second half of "Another Year Ends". It's the "credits" song, but it's beautifully done and captures the spirit of, not only the movie, but the entire series.
22-24. The rock songs. They're alright, not the greatest, but fun to listen to. Their the Yule Ball songs as well and they are a nice little touch to the soundtrack and the movie.
Overall, this soundtrack is VERY good and I would recommend it to anyone.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] PosterHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth film (and soundtrack album) in the massively successful Harry Potter franchise-nearly $1 billion in U.S. box office alone-features a score by Academy Award-nominated composer Patrick Doyle and three songs written by modern rocker Jarvis Cocker, and performed by Cocker, Jonny Greenwood, Phil Selway, Steve Claydon and Jason Buckle-with all these musicians also appearing in the movie. Big news on the Harry Potter musical front: After scoring the first three installments in the series, John Williams has been replaced by Patrick Doyle. Still, Williams never feels far away. His main theme pops up here and there, and a track like "Voldemort," which eloquently illustrates the soul of a blacker-than-black wizard with thunderous cymbal crashes, shrieking horns, tumultuous strings, and a stately finish, firmly belongs in the Williams mode. Overall, Doyle acquits himself well. He can do light when needed ("The Quidditch World Cup," which starts out like some kind of jig), but mostly he's required to be ominous ("The Quidditch World Cup," which ends in martial war chants). Among the highlights are the aforementioned "Voldemort," but also the frantic, overpowering "The Dark Mark." Note that the CD concludes on a jarringly different note with three songs by the Weird Sisters, the group that performs at Hogwarts' Yule Ball. Led by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, the ad hoc band also includes members of Radiohead and Cocker's side project Relaxed Muscle. "Do the Hippogriff" is a fast-paced rocker that somehow comes across like a grungy hybrid of Billy Idol's "White Wedding" and "Dancing with Myself." The other two songs--"This Is the Night" and "Magic Works"--are less obvious, and much better. Still, the contrast between these tracks and the instrumental score that precedes them may not be to everybody's taste. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
