Free Music Review: Brutal and Emotional in all aspects
Hit: 5 Stars

This was the first Hate Eternal cd I ever bought (no joke), and I really, honest like it alot. I bought "Fury and Flames" about a couple monts ago on FYE.com, and it instantly became one of my favorite metal cd's of 2008, and it's also in my book one of the finest death metal albums of 2008 as well. This album is just absolutely brutal, scorching, hammering, bludgeoning, neck snapping, skull crushing, and emotionally powerful in all aspects, it'll have you feeling like you're being violently led into the flaming portals of hell and having you gasping for your breath after returning scorched and battered. You can feel every single ounce of anger, rage, frustration, and brutality all in one skull crushing package. Vocalist/Guitarist Erik Rutan (who also did time in Morbid Angel before) is defintaly one of the best musicians in death metal. His growling vocals are just hellaciously brutal, full-bodied, and downright demonically evil sounding throughout, and not to mention that he's also an excellent guitarist as well. I also learned that Erik was inspired by the passing and loss of his bandmate and close friend Jared Anderson (who died in his sleep in 2006 I believe), and Erik does a masterful job at channeling all of his emotions including anger, rage, frustration, and loss musically and lyrically, and I also give him a thumbs up for dedicating this album to Jared's memory as well.

Backing up Erik Rutan on "Fury and Flames" are three new members in second guitarist Shaun Kelley, drummer Jade Simonetto, and last but certainly not least Cannibal Corpse bassist Alex Webster, and they all prove to be strong, and professionally excellent musicians in their own respective rights. Erik and Shaun both shred, rip, and tear through the listener's ears with heavy, monstrous, massive, bludgeoning riffs and wicked, winding, and wailng leads and solos. Jade does an extremely excellent job on the drums. The blast beats and double bass kicks are just completely out of this world, and of course Alex does an all around jaw dropping and masterful job on the bass. His bass playing on here is heavy, audible, and very technical too. I've always considered Alex as one of the best bassists in death metal, and I still do, he's just plain awesome.

Here's a look at some of the highlights on this album.

The opening scorching blaster "Hell Envenom" is one of my heavy favorites that is highlighted by a battering, trainwrecking assault of rapid fire blast beats, massive, bludgeoning riffs, evil full-bodied growls from Erik, and a pair of wicked, winding solos to boot. The next track "Whom Gods May Destroy" continues the bludgeoning assault with more battering, slamming drum blasts, vicious, commanding death growls, and heavy abrasive riffing, while the third thrack "Para Bellum" features busy slamming double bass kicking, along with more hammering beats, monster rampaging riffs including another pair of killer solos. Track four "Bringer of Storms" (my personal favorite on here) is a more groove-oriented track but it's still heavy and brutal, and highlighted by evil, commanding growling vocals, maniacal, back scorching riffs and whirling leads, more slamming, crushing out of this world blast beats with more assaulting double bass included, some great humming basslines from Alex, and a great guitar solo by Erik near the end. Track six "Thus Salvation" is another highlight that is highlighted by more monstrous, slaughtering riffs, ear popping basslines, insane double bass work, and some great catchy soloing by Shaun and Erik. Track seven "Proclamation of the Damned" features more slamming, stampeding blast beats, savage, scathing riffage, and more wicked demonic growls and roars, as well as more aweome soloing. Track nine "Tombeau (Le Tombeau de la Fureur et des Flammes)" (which is dedicated to Jared Anderson) is definately one of the best songs on here as well as another highlight and favorite that is highlighted by an awesomely epic, lengthy, soaring guitar solo section, as well as more punishing drums and pounding basslines.
Jeremy's song ratings:
1. Hell Envenom (4:09) - 5/5
2. Whom Gods May Destroy (3:41) - 5/5
3. Para Bellum (4:29) - 5/5
4. Bringer of Storms (5:18) - 5/5
5. The Funery March (4:15) - 5/5
6. Thus Salvation (3:57) - 5/5
7. Proclamation of the Damned (4:13) - 5/5
8. Fury Within (3:33) - 5/5
9. Tombeau (Le Tombeau de la Fureur et des Flammes) (4:41) - 5/5
10. Coronach (1:39) - 4/5

Overall, "Fury and Flames" is an absolute heavy, raging, brutal, and emotionally powerful death metal tour de force, and it's definately one of the finest and best death metal albums of 2008. Trust me my friends, it's definately worth hearing. So if you're a fan of Hate Eternal, death metal, extreme metal, or if you just love metal period, then by all means, you'll truly love this album. Well Enjoy!!

HAIL ERIK RUTAN AND HAIL HATE ETERNAL!!

Fury & Flames Poster

2008 release from Tampa, Florida's very own Hate Eternal, the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2005 release I, Monarch. Fury and Flames is the band's most diverse and emotionally fueled record to date due to the passing of bassist and good friend Jared Anderson. The album features the addition of new members Shaune Kelley as second guitarist and Jade Simonetto on drums. The addition of second guitarist Shaune means that this is the first time Hate Eternal will be able to perform as a four piece live. Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse stepped in on bass for the recording, but due to his insane schedule with Cannibal will not be able to tour with the band. Metal Blade Records. 10 tracks.
