Free Music Review: New millennium thrashterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

Trends have always come and gone in the world of heavy metal music. Sometimes breakdowns are hugely popular, but sometimes it's blast beats or guitar solos that are "the in thing," but they eventually grow tiresome and fade out. Emo and hardcore-influenced metal is another example of something that is here today, but will be gone tomorrow (plus, it seems like just yesterday that "nu-metal" albums were flying off the shelves.) But no matter what fashion is in style at the current time, there is no way metalheads will ever forget about the almighty guitar riff!

Case in point: Sweden's The Haunted, and their third full-length effort, 2002's thrilling "One Kill Wonder." This excellent album would be Marco Aro's last with the band, but he sure did go out with a bang. He lays down his visceral, tortured vocals while drummer Per Moller Jensen drives the songs' rhythms with energetic blast beats. Ultimately, however, both of these things take a back seat to the two guitarists, Anders Bjorler and Patrik Jensen, who make sure the songs are chocked full of killer, Slayer-worthy shredding. The duo's playing is so tight, fast, sharp, inexorable, and inspired, and they play off of each other so well that it's just positively staggering (it truly must be heard to be believed.) Thus, listeners who enjoy intense, highly technical, riff-choked thrash are sure to fall in love with this album very quickly.

After the hooky, mid-tempo gallop of the brief intro track ("Privation of Faith Inc.,") "One Kill Wonder" peels out of the starting gate with tires squealing. The rocketing "Godpuppet" charges straight out of your speakers and plows you over while simultaneously getting your heart going a mile a minute with awesome, smoke-inducing guitar leads, deft, pounding double bass work, and Marco's super aggressive vocals. Similarly, "Everlasting" is a dizzying onslaught of excellent, streamlined chainsaw riffs, a nice solo, and even some good bass work.

The vast majority of this disc is composed of manic, blood-pumping thrash, but that's not to say there isn't some dynamic here. It isn't until the fifth track that the listener is even allowed to blink - "D.O.A." is a much slower number with chunky riffs, a skipping beat, a really catchy and memorable chorus, and a series of ripping solos. Following this is "Demon Eyes" a mostly slow, melodic and even somewhat atmospheric interlude which makes heavy use of ominous guitar feedback before flowing through a brief series of crunchy, chugging riffs, and then coming back down for a calm, non-threatening end. The album doesn't lose any momentum whatsoever by including these two fairly restrained tracks, though, because they are immediately offset well by the very propulsive and fiery next track, "Urban Predator."

Other highlights are the three closing songs, the slower, grinding groove that evokes Slayer circa their "Divine Intervention" or "Diabolus in Musica" era, and the blistering, fleet-fingered, razorwire riffage of ripping speedsters "Shoothead," and the closing title track.

Some may criticize The Haunted for their lack of subtlety or for sounding one-dimensional, but they are clearly missing the point. There isn't a single mediocre/bad riff, ounce of filler, or bland or wasted moment to be found anywhere on here. So, in other words, "One Kill Wonder" just might be this millennium's "Reign in Blood." Be sure to pick it up.
