Free Music Review: 99 Knives Inside!

I finally got my hands on rEVOLVEr, the much-anticipated (at least by me) new release from The Haunted and I'm glad to say, it has exceeded my high expectations, and then some. You get all the fury you'd expect from a Haunted album in songs like "All Against All", "99", "What Will Become" and "Smut King". So yes, it's definitely worth it to get the bonus tracks on the digipak version. Personally, I liked the other cover art a little more (the silhouette in a suit with fangs on a white background) but the "arm" design is pretty cool too. Plus, the additional art inside is seriously wicked - lots of eyes, brass knuckles, fangs, knives and a nice chokehold. Back to the music... It's really great to have vocalist Peter Dolving back with The Haunted, his versatility is showcased amazingly throughout this CD. Marco Aro did amazing work with the last two Haunted albums but, to be honest, I'm just as happy to have The Haunted putting out quality stuff AND the promise of a new Face Down record in the future. Getting back to the songs themselves... Besides the straight-ahead aggressive tracks, The Haunted have added an extra dimension or two to their sound that I consider a very pleasant surprise. Prime examples are the tracks "Abysmal" and especially the album closer, "My Shadow". This one is really, well, haunting. I've seen some reviews complaining about the "clean vocals" in these songs, but I think it adds an extra touch of doom that makes this album really shine. I wouldn't even call them "clean vocals" in the dreaded conventional sense, I'm reminded more of the semi-whisper chant style used often by Moonspell. Not to worry though, this is still very much a thrash record, with the usual touch of melodic death and hardcore that gives The Haunted their unique style. Now I never liked Sick of It All, so when I heard that their lead singer would be contributing guest vocals to the aforementioned "What Will Become", I didn't really know what to expect. Another pleasant surprise for me, because the song really shreds, in part due to the aggressive howls of both vocalists. All in all, you can really sum up this album with the phrase everyone seems to use these days: "it's a natural evolution for the band." A bit cliché, but true nonetheless - rEVOLVEr has The Haunted taking their special brand of thrash and marching forward with a vicious, powerful and diverse record. I guess the album title fits after all, even though I still think that modified upper/lower case names are stupid. What's in a title anyway? It's not about names or lineup changes or genre classifications - it's all about the music and these tunes truly kill.
