Free Music Notes for Hard Hitting Songs for Hard Hit PeopleFree Music Review: One of the most underrated American artists of all time Hit: 5 Stars
The thing that amazes me about Hazel Dickens is her breathtaking lyrical ability. The music is absolutely superb, and well produced, but it's the lyrical power of songs like "Lost Patterns" that leave me completely speechless. She is actually singing poetry. I recommend you download the MP3s available here to see what I'm talking about, but keep in mind that her sound and messages range beyond what's represented here. Her word choice on "Lost Patterns" is exceptionally descriptive and well designed, and by itself is enough to make you feel the desperation as if it was your own. But coupled with her voice, and that lovely mountain sound... Outstanding. Not all of her songs are as intensely lonely as Lost Patterns. Some are especially lush and vibrant, such as "West Virginia, My Home." If you have a single bluegrass bone in your body, you won't be disappointed buying this album.
Free Music Review: The deepest hardest blues Hit: 5 Stars
This music is clear-eyed, bright, and hard. "Aragon Mill," "Tommorow's Already Lost," and, well, everything else is impossibly beautiful and harsh. There are a lot of over used adjectives for deeply American music like this, and they really all apply. Listening to this music you know you can trust what she says. Listening to this music you also know that you should be looking out as much as you can for people who are not as fortunate as you. I first heard her singing "Conversation with Death" on Songcatcher, and just knew that I would have to listen to everything she's done. As a fan I hope she makes a record either by herself, with Iris Dement, Alice Gerrard, or whoever she wants to and makes a million bucks. As a person I just hope I can live up to what her work makes me feel. With the political weather the way it is now, this hard world will just get harder.
Free Music Review: The simple truth Hit: 5 Stars
Hazel Dickens speaks the simple unvarnished truth. There is no other artist, in virtually any medium, that is as true, direct and sympathetic as Hazel Dickens. This is not the "I feel this, and I feel that you need to feel the way I feel" sort of thing that affects so very much "folk" music, and virtually all "singer songwriter" music.
Hazel just simply, directly, and emotionally tells life as it really is. Maybe not for you, Dear Reader, but for so many people. She does not ask you to "feel as she feels," merely to listen and let yout heart and mind decide.
I have been a fan of Ms. Dickens since the LP vinly days. I know of no other that is her equal.
Free Music Review: "It's hard to tell the singer from the song" Hit: 5 Stars
I discovered this c.d. at random in a used music shop.........I'm glad I did. It's a keeper! This is a great album to 'be with' when you're blue. Hazel expresses so much in her huge voice with careless statements like; "...starin' at that worn linolieum tryin' to trace the lost patterns 'round his tears...." "...we sometimes drive away the ones who care, from all the wearing and the tearing, the caring just walks right out the door." I like a broad range of musical expression, but the cornerstone has to remain real people. You don't get any real-er than Hazel.
Free Music Review: The title says it all Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great album by a singer-songwriter who has lived a hard life -- one of 11 children in poverty-stricken West Virginia, watching her brother die from black lung disease, leaving home at 16 to work in the factories. Her voice expresses great empathy for the downtrodden and has moved me to tears. Anybody who's been flat broke, mistreated, overworked, homesick, dumped, or exploited but still has some spirit left in them can relate to this selection of songs. The country/bluegrass band on this album is really good too.
