Free Music Review: Heart: THE ESSENTIAL HEART (2002)
Hit: 5 Stars

In 2002, Heart released their nineteenth album entitled, THE ESSENTIAL HEART. Yes, this is another greatest hits compilation, but this time, Heart decided to make this one a double-disc album featuring all of their greatest hits from 1976 to 1995 (DREAMBOAT ANNIE, LITTLE QUEEN, MAGAZINE, DOG & BUTTERFLY, BEBE LE STRANGE, GREATEST HITS LIVE, PRIVATE AUDITION, PASSIONWORKS, HEART, BAD ANIMALS, BRIGADE, ROCK THE HOUSE LIVE!, DESIRE WALKS ON, and THE ROAD HOME).

Disc One: 1976-1983

CRAZY ON YOU
From the album DREAMBOAT ANNIE (1976). Still a great tune after all these years. I can never tired of hearing this song.

MAGIC MAN
From the album DREAMBOAT ANNIE (1976). Another one of Heart's greatest songs. Love this one.

DREAMBOAT ANNIE (Reprise)
From the album DREAMBOAT ANNIE (1976). I still don't understand why Heart keeps including the Reprise version of this song their compilations. It's not a bad Reprise, but I still prefer the album/single version.

BARRACUDA
From the album LITTLE QUEEN (1977). Great song. Still a kick-a** tune.

LITTLE QUEEN
From the album LITTLE QUEEN (1977). Great title track to their 1977 album.

KICK IT OUT
From the album LITTLE QUEEN (1977). Great.

LOVE ALIVE
From the album LITTLE QUEEN (1977). Not one of my favorites.

HEARTLESS
From the album MAGAZINE (1978). Not one of my favorites.

STRAIGHT ON
From the album DOG & BUTTERFLY (1978). Great rocker.

DOG & BUTTERFLY
From the album DOG & BUTTERFLY (1978). Great song.

SILVER WHEELS (Instrumental)
From the album BEBE LE STRANGE (1980). Not a bad instrumental piece, but they should have filled this space with "Bebe Le Strange".

EVEN IT UP
From the album BEBE LE STRANGE (1980). Great song.

ROCK AND ROLL (Live)
From the album GREATEST HITS LIVE (1980). Awesome rendition.

TELL IT LIKE IT IS
From the album GREATEST HITS LIVE (1980). Not bad, but not a favorite of mine.

UNCHAINED MELODY (Live)
From the album GREATEST HITS LIVE (1980). Deleted from the CD & Cassette editions of GREATEST HITS LIVE (1980). This is a great rendition. I was never fond of the original version, which was recorded by The Righteous Brothers.

THIS MAN IS MINE
From the album PRIVATE AUDITION (1982). Great song, but I wish "Private Audition" was included here, for it's "...The grand tradition. Private Audition..."

HOW CAN I REFUSE
From the album PASSIONWORKS (1983). Great rocker.

ALLIES
From the album PASSIONWORKS (1983). Great power ballad, and I'm glad to see a second song from the PASSIONWORKS album appear on one of their compilations.

Disc Two: 1985-1995

WHAT ABOUT LOVE
From the album HEART (1985). Great song. This is the version that appears on the vinyl edition of the HEART album.

NEVER
From the album HEART (1985). Another great song. This is the version that appears on the vinyl edition of the HEART album.

THESE DREAMS
From the album HEART (1985). My favorite Heart song still making appearences on Heart's compilations. I cannot go one day or even one hour without hearing this song.

NOTHIN' AT ALL
From the album HEART (1985). Great song. This is the version that appears on the vinyl edition of the HEART album.

IF LOOKS COULD KILL
From the album HEART (1985). Great rocker, that tells you that Ann Wilson is the wrong person to cheat on. This is the version that appears on the vinyl edition of the HEART album.

ALONE
From the album BAD ANIMALS (1987). Excellent power ballad.

WHO WILL YOU RUN TO
From the album BAD ANIMALS (1987). Great song.

THERE'S THE GIRL
From the album BAD ANIMALS (1987). Another great one.

I WANT YOU SO BAD
From the album BAD ANIMALS (1987). Great song.

ALL I WANNA DO IS MAKE LOVE TO YOU
From the album BRIGADE (1990). Another great power ballad.

WILD CHILD
From the album BRIGADE (1990). Great rocker, and it sounded even better when it was performed on THE BRIGADE TOUR.

I DIDN'T WANT TO NEED YOU
From the album BRIGADE (1990). Great song.

SECRET
From the album BRIGADE (1990). Great.

STRANDED
From the album BRIGADE (1990). Not a bad ballad.

YOU'RE THE VOICE (Live)
From the album ROCK THE HOUSE LIVE! (1991). Great song. Both this live version and the studio recorded version are brilliant ballads.

WILL YOU BE THERE (IN THE MORNING)
From the album DESIRE WALKS ON (1993). Another great song with Nancy Wilson in the lead.

BLACK ON BLACK II
From the album DESIRE WALKS ON (1993). No matter what, this song will always be my favorite song from the DESIRE WALKS ON album.

RING THEM BELLS (duet with Layne Staley of ALICE IN CHAINS)
From the album DESIRE WALKS ON (1993). This song was never released as a single, but I am guessing that Heart included this song on this album for Layne Stayle had passed away around the time of this album's release. Good song.

THE ROAD HOME (Live) (Edit)
From the album THE ROAD HOME (1995). Great song.

This is the one album where you can have all of Heart's greatest hits on one CD, despite the fact that some hits are missing, like: "Bebe Le Strange", "Dreamboat Annie" (album version), "Break", and a few others, but this is the album for all fans to have if they want all of Heart's hits on one album (taking up two discs).

Free Music Review: Wrong version of Dreamboat Annie ruins the set
Hit: 3 Stars

I suppose it was done to please Rock purists, but the version of Dreamboat Annie included with this set is the second, or reprise of the song from the same titled album. The first version included a background banjo track, and probably was left out because of it. Too bad, the reprise completely sucks, and is way too slow. I'm sorry that I can't take this back. So it goes with the music industry. Throw in trash, and make it impossible to return.

I would like to know how to obtain lyrics for the Essential Heart CD?

Thanks, VW

Free Music Review: Classic, But...
Hit: 5 Stars

This is indeed the best HEART compilation to date, out of the many "Hits" compilations the Wilson Sisters have been honored with in the past decade. "The Essential Heart" includes classic hits and music from the two gold and platinum adorned HEART eras of the 70's and 80's, which continued well into the 90's before the band fell into a lower profile. However, disc one is a bit cluttered and somewhat wasted on such pointless "filler" tracks as their insipid teasing cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock And Roll" and the classic jazz-pop torcher, "Unchained Melody"...with all the Heart "Live" cd-albums still in print, WHY rehash these two boring tracks? Ann & Nancy should have preferred to wisely mine their catalogue so as to dazzle their multi-generations of fans with remastered inclusions of more VINTAGE and impeccable HEART gems such as "White Lightning & Wine", the gorgeously aged "Just The Wine", their artistically defining epic "Rockin'Heaven Down", the gritty rocker "Bebe Le Strange" and possibly their enchanting "Devil Delight" tracks instead of the ill chosen and mindless "Little Queen", "Kick It Out", "Silver Wheels" and the two before mentioned pointless "live" tracks. The second disc is a perfectly chosen and chronilogically paced "hit singles" collection of the band's second coming, sets the pace and poises Heart for their third [forthcoming] era of commercial success. Hopefully, the Wilsons will continue to impress us for many more years to come.

Free Music Review: Thanks! I found 'Stranger' by Jefferson Starship.
Hit: 5 Stars

Thanks to all those who responded to my inquiry about a song that I had been searching for, 'Stranger.' I thought it was by Heart, but it's by Jefferson Starship.
