Free Music Notes for Hedwig and the Angry InchFree Music Review: Amazing Music for an Amazing Movie Hit: 5 Stars
I just came from seeing the movie version of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" and could not resist buying the CD on the way home. Nearly every single song is terrific and John Cameron Mitchell's vocal performances are electrifying--you can't take your eyes (or ears) off of him! It's almost too bad that the songs are as R-rated as the rest of the film; many of them would make great singles, and even better music videos. The film and its music are an extra special treat for Bowie/Reed/Iggy fans (and, weirdly, Farrah Fawcett/Anne Murray/Olivia Newton-John fans) but just about anyone--except maybe my mom--would see this as a near-perfect movie musical. See it, hear it, make it your own!
Free Music Review: Hella Rockin Hit: 5 Stars
Even though I consider myself a Hip Hop Head, I LOVE this CD. It's like a combination of Abba, Queen, early to mid 80s punk, soul (think Aaron Neville) and some Hip Hop songs. Plus some of the lyrics are hilarious. I always laugh at Sugar Daddy no matter how often I hear it. I love how the woman's yelps and singing voice counterpoints the man's voice on a lot of the tracks. Plus you gotta love the butt kickin guitars. I recommend for people who like to stretch a little and listen to something outside of the rigid, corporate categories you usually hear on the radio. I usually listen to the CD a minimum of 2 times whenever I play it.
Free Music Review: Sharper than the OCR, but just as emotionally charged Hit: 5 Stars
The comparision between this and the Original Cast Recording is the same as between a regular bands' studio and live album, which is basically what the musical was always trying to capture the essence of anyway.
The only slightly down point is that, even if you've never seen the live show or even film, you can tell that the two added tracks "Nailed' and "Freaks", while sure to thrill anyone actually looking to be angry, are simply not up to the caliber of the other original twelve.
However, whether you skip them or not you're in for a ride of definite, unadulterated and completely brillant ROCK.
Free Music Review: HEDWIG rocks the big screen! Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a huge fan of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH for a couple of years, and I'm thrilled to see that it's making such a brilliant transition to the screen. Stephen Trask's score is dynamite rock theatre at its beast, and as for the cast, John Cameron Mitchell IS Hedwig. Period, end of story. No one can play her like him. Miriam Shor is fab as Yitzhak. In comparison to the earthshattering Original Cast Recording, this HEDWIG might not sound as polished, but the earthier tone suits the realism of the film perfectly. You simply can't go wrong with Trask's score and Mitchell's "Hedwig."
Free Music Review: play it loud! Hit: 5 Stars
Put it this way.....when I have to go to work and don't want to, when I have to got to the dentist, when I am going out to a party, when I feel blue, there is nothing that gets me up and going like this soundtrack. From the first shout of, "Don't you know me Kansas City? I'm the new Berlin Wall!" I am hooked and feeling better. It is really unusual for a rock soundtrack to have lyrical references to mythology and biblical history and that made it even more intelligant and interesting. I forgo the morning coffee now and just crank this cd and now my neigbors are doing the same.
