Free Music Review: Still good, but not AS good...

I was so excited for this album to come out...I checked the Hem website every day for weeks waiting to see if song samples were posted. And finally it was released! And it is a very good album. But I don't feel that it's quite as original or good throughout as Rabbit Songs. That album definitely outstrips this one. I feel that Eveningland lacks the masterful songwriting of Rabbit Songs...you might notice that several of the songs make heavy use of Sally's upper register...almost relying on its wow-factor to cover up for lack of innovation in the melodies. The orchestrations are nice, but almost a bit heavy-handed (though perhaps I just prefer the spare instrumentation of Rabbit Songs). The song "Pacific", which had been considered for Rabbit Songs, uses noticeably simpler accompaniment than most of the other tracks. I think that the extra layering of strings almost makes the album seem a bit fuddy-duddy. One other thing kind of bothered me, and would seem to lend credence to my less-original-songwriting idea, and that is that you can take the melodies from a couple of songs, and sing them over the melodies in other songs, and they fit in with hardly any dissonance. Also, the introductions to songs 9 and 16 are, for all intents and purposes, exactly the same. That just feels like cheating, beautiful as those two songs are. So I guess my overall thoughts are that this album is a bit too homogeneous, and a bit too cluttered with instruments in an attempt to conceal the lesser quality of the songs, where Rabbit Songs' starker sound served to underscore the beautiful simplicity of each tune. But you should still buy it! It's eminently sing-along-able, Sally's voice is absolutely gorgeous, and there are a few standout songs that I can't seem to get out of my head. It's a really good album...I guess that it's just that impossible to live up to the groundbreaking style and sound of Rabbit Songs.
