Free Music Review: A Better Coupling

Now this is more like it! In my reviews for Volumes 13 & 15 of the "Isaac Stern: A Life in Music" series, I criticized Sony for the way they issued the Violin Concertos/Works of Barber and Maxwell Davies, and Dutilleux and Bernstein respectively. This earlier release which couples the Dutilleux with the Maxwell Davies makes much more sense -- both recordings are digital from the mid-80s and stylistically these pieces are a better match. However, this disc is not without its problems. It is a first generation disc that could benefit somewhat from remastering, and it is still listed at full-price while the "Life in Music" series are all available at mid-line. But for those of you that can't stand redundant performances in your collection (like me), this is the title to buy.
