Free Music Review: WARNING! Don't pitch your old Karajan CD's just yet...

I am a longtime Karajan fan and have precious little to add to the already ample glowing reviews of this set. I have just two points to make:
1. Watch the dates on the digital remastering. For the most part, these appear to be the latest, greatest, remasterings, but not always. Case in point: the Mozart Horn Concerti with Dennis Brain. This set includes the inferior 1987 remastering with harsh string sound. The one I have is the 1997 remastering (EMI CDC 7243 5 56231 2 6). It is much improved and contains some bonus material featuring Brain (and not Karajan) which is presumably why it was not used in this set. That is the only exception I found, but there may be others.
2. The "other" star of this set is the Philharmonia Orchestra in its prime, with musicians such as Dennis Brain on French horn, along with one of the best woodwind sections ever assembled. The 2nd movement of the Tchaikovsky 5th and the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante K.297b are unsurpassed for this reason alone. The Philharmonia Orchestra was so good in the early 50's, that even those who dislike Karajan would get enjoyment out of this set.
If I were completely sure the rest of the remasterings were the latest I would give it 5 stars, but this must be checked. My advice: listen to the CD you have, then listen to the one in this set. If yours sounds better, keep it.
