Free Music Review: Herbie does '70s pop - approach with caution

If you're looking to hear Herbie absolutely blow it, look no further than here. The best example of him blowing it is on the "Cantaloupe Island" remake, done up as stereotypical mid-'70s funk - which I normally really enjoy, but not here, since "Cantaloupe Island" doesn't work as funk. It works as bluesy jazz, for sure, but not as funk. Or, are you interested in hearing Herbie try arena-rock? I hope you're not, but if you are... well, that's the best way I can describe "The Spider". Hell, he even shoots for calypso on "Gentle Thoughts". Something's wrong with that, not like that isn't glaringly obvious or anything. He also walks right into the overproduced cheese trap on the would-be menacing "Sansho Sima" and "People Music". He does cook up two genuinely solid funk grooves: the poppy, slightly disco-influenced "Doin' It", and "Swamp Rat", with great soloing. Those two songs are great, so if you're totally convinced this may be worthwhile in spite of what I say (I can't run your life, after all), you may want to play the tar out of those two and skip the rest. And if you get this before Empyrean Isles, Maiden Voyage, The Prisoner, Head Hunters, Man-Child or V.S.O.P.: the Quintet, shame on you!
