Herbie Mann was no jazz innovator. Put him next to Coltrane or Eric Dolphy or even Lee Morgan and it all seems kind of light. And that "Push Push"
But in retrospect, even "Push Push" was a nice little tune. And Mann, despite a lack of ambition, was one great flute player. On both these early Atlantic sets, he plays both latin jazz, and his take on some jazz standards.
He dances, moves, darts with his nimble and lilting flute lines. This guy is melodic, and fast--he can jolt off a wonderfully tuneful phrase so fast, he is gone as the beautiful gesture lingers.
Mann should have worked in bigger jazz forms--maybe with Mingus or even Coltrane. He definately had the chops to play much more sweeping music than he did.
But for pure technical prowess, you can't do better.
