Free Music Review: A STORY OF ADDICTION, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY A STORY OF TRIUMPH
Hit: 5 Stars

What we have here is quite possibly the best pure rock album release in years. I know that when reading CD reviews you often hear statements like that, but in the case of this CD it just so happens to be true. Simply put, this CD is phenomenal, lyrically and musically, and is an accomplishment that Nikki should be very proud of. While Queensr˙che's 'Operation Mindcrime' is widely regarded as the best concept rock album of all time, I personally find this non-fiction concept album to be a bit more cohesive and enjoyable to listen to, and certainly worthy of consideration for that title. Jedd Beaudoin who wrote the Amazon Editorial Review above is way off the mark in every single aspect of his review, and absolutely and completely missed the point of this album. In a fair and accurate nutshell his review says that he does not like this CD because it does not sound like Mötley Crüe, and it is not upbeat enough. In turn I will put my comments about his review for this CD in a fair and accurate nutshell; what a f***ing feeble-minded douchebag, how did this dolt get a job reviewing CD's, he needs to go and do something he's good at.

With this CD, Nikki Sixx, the undeniable heart and soul of Mötley Crüe, has released an album that clearly demonstrates why Mötley Crüe attained the success they did in the 80's and 90's. The success attained was certainly not because of Vince Neil's singing, Mick Mars' guitar playing, or even Tommy Lee's incredible drumming, NO, it was because of Nikki Sixx's songwriting, period. You've got to love the tortured artist, they are almost without exception the most inspired, creative and brilliant songwriters. I think it is very likely that without the talent of Nikki Sixx Mötley Crüe would have been just another 80's band, which few would currently even remember. But that is of course only a hypothetical argument, as Nikki was the founding member and there never would have been a Mötley Crüe without him.

Nikki, a prolific and masterful songwriter, with this album gives us a ticket to ride along with him on his self-destructive journey through life and rock stardom in the late 80's utilizing his personal journal or 'Heroin Diary'. While most of us will find very little in the life of a heroin addicted rock star dealing with many personal demons to be personally relatable, that is not the point of this album. Perhaps much like a bad movie (but a very good album), this album is a candid glimpse into the life of a rock star who has all the success imaginable, but behind all of the glamour of rock stardom is a man finding himself constantly fighting depression and the demons from a troubled youth. While for a rock star it's certainly not a far-fetched story, on the other hand it's not your typical rock album subject matter either. And while some may find the subject matter to be a bit heavy and unsettling, I only see this album as a welcomed breath of fresh air. And don't we really have enough meaningless bulls**t rock albums to listen to anyway?

This album is what would generally be labeled a concept album, however, it is more correctly identified on the CD cover as a soundtrack. No, there is no movie, but there is a book, with each of the 13 songs on this album coinciding with a chapter of the book. This is a soundtrack to the book, 'The Heroin Diaries - A Year In The Life Of A Shattered Rock Star', and of course a soundtrack to Nikki's life in the late 80's.

In conclusion, while this album is about a self-destructive rock star hitting rock-bottom, in the end it is also about finding that needed moment of clarity, and eventually, realizing recovery. And inspired by his addiction and recovery Nikki founded his own charity, Running Wild In The Night, a fundraising initiative for Covenant House Of California, which aims to keep young children off the streets, and keep them off the path that Nikki went down when he was younger. In fact, a portion of the proceeds from this project will go to support this cause. So, you see, this ends up a being a story with a happy ending, and hopefully... happily ever after.

Free Music Review: PHENOMENAL !!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

ABSOLOUTELY AND UTTERLY PHENOMENAL.

I have never, and hopefully never will be, addicted to drugs, but god knows my addictions to booze will never set me free of anything, regardless of what my disease tells me, otherwise. But I am certain to be addicted to this CD and book, The Heroin Diaries; and that is a gift. Thank you Nikki Sixx and his band, Sixx A.M. for putting out the most incredible piece(s) of music I have heard in a VERY long time.

Other than my favorite all-time band, Aerosmith, I have NEVER been more moved by a CD in my entire life.

The book is bone-chillingly honest (I reviewed that already...) and this CD is just as mind-blowing, if not more. The melodic, yet hard driven rock sound of these haunting songs, brings you to that place that Nikki so wants everyone to understand. He so nailed it on this one, it is an absoloute masterpiece.

During his addiction, the depths of darkness was as low as one can go. Without his music, who knows if he had any other means of escaping. I cannot imagine such despair, and I am grateful his god given gifts have saved him.

This CD just blew me away; and does every time I listen.

The lead singer is amazing; and has the voice to just pound out the passion of these genious written songs. The remaining members of his band have more talent than the other members of Motley Crue can only wish for. Sorry, but that's just my opinion. Nikki is a poet, and an complete artist; and this collection proves that beyond any doubt.

Nikki... I never realized your talent; it's truly amazing. I am so sorry for all the anguish you went through; it breaks my heart; as you seem to be an extremely intelligent man; so with that said, I shouldn't be as surprised to see you made it through. There is a reason you are still here, and you know why also. So keep going!

I cry a bit (no, I cry hard...) when I hear some of these songs; the passion in the lyrics, it is just so strong and gets you right in that spot.

I suppose I will never understand a mother and father's decision to just disappear, expecting others to raise their kids. That is just beyond my comprehension as a mother.... who's witnessed it. Nikki, I am sorry, and as a mother who's father of her son abandoned HIM.... I hug you right now.

I am touched so deeply by this album and the diaries; it is rare, and it is a treasure.

There is no doubt in my mind.... Parents whose wish for their sons or daughters is to JUST SAY NO... GET THIS CD! and his book. The collection is your vehicle to open the lines of communication. Isn't this ultimately what we want as parents? The communication? If you don't, and you don't subject them to this realism, you aren't doing your children any favors. Drugs are out there, they are real, and they can destroy, anyone.

Yes, it is raw, and yes some of the songs paint a not-so pretty picture; but isn't this the point? The truth of the matter is....drugs give the illusion of happiness, they make one believe all is well in the world, all the while, they piece by piece, destroy your soul and leave you with nothing. The more honest and open we are with our children about this fact, the more ahead of the game.... we can be.

Drugs don't necessarily choose who they destroy, the bottom line is, they destroy, the ones we least suspect...period.

Nikki's songs, and stories will educate them ..and QUICK.

Free Music Review: Beautifully addictive and horrifying
Hit: 5 Stars

Well, this would be the first review I've ever put on here only because I just felt so compelled after listening to this CD a few times.

I have never... and I mean never... had a CD affect me in the way that this one has. Coupled with the book for this that I just finished, I'm left with a feeling of overwhelming emotions that range fro sadness to disgust to relief. I lived my teen years through the heyday of Motley Crue and have to honestly say that I admired and idolized them back then for all of the wrong reasons. Now I can say I admire Nikki Sixx for all of the RIGHT reasons.

This CD is a whirlwind tour of the hell and depths that he went to with his addictions. Don't be fooled. Although heroin was what he had the worst of his times with, he was a garbage head and put everything into his system that he came across. You can -feel- this in these songs.

I'm not going to detail every song but talk about what I thought were the most powerful of them. All of the tracks on this CD are beautiful and tragic but these just stood out to me.

"X-Mas in Hell" is just a simple introduction with spoken word and a twisted Christmas carol that really sets the mood for what's to come.

"Van Nuys" is just an unbelievably powerful song that draws you into his heroin den immediately and gives you the feeling of how tortured he was right away. The vocals and bass line in this song suck you right in.

"Life is Beautiful" is his coming through the other side. Call it preachy if you want but it's meaning is to say that you need to go through all of the bad times in your life to truly enjoy the good times. The song itself is a wonderfully powerful arrangement.

"Accidents Can Happen" is a fantastic ballad about relapse and the fact that it doesn't have to be the end of the world unless you allow it to. This is the closest song on the CD to a "power ballad" and James Michaels' vocals are probably at their best on this song. It showcases his range, his talent, and his ability to bring emotion across.

"Girl With Golden Eyes" is the love song on this CD. The only difference is that this love song isn't dedicated to any woman. It's dedicated to what his true love was and that was heroin. He likens it to being so in love with a woman that he found comfort and ease in the arms of his "lover".

All in all, this CD is probably the best I have heard in -ages- and I would have paid twice what I did for it. Nikki's songwriting is the best I have ever heard from him and the best I have heard from almost anyone. It's one thing to hear a song that you can relate to. It's another when a song sucks you in and doesn't let you go and that's exactly what's Nikki's songwriting does on this CD. Michaels' vocals are truly chameleon-like and fit each and every song perfectly. DJ Ashba's guitarwork is a thing to behold as well.

In closing, this is easily the best and most gratifying CD I have bought in years. And make sure to pick up the book as well. As unbelievable as this CD is, the book is even better.

Free Music Review: Best CD Available This Year - PERIOD!!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I will start this review by saying that I am a U.S. Servicemember who has been serving overseas for the past 7 years; as such, I have become what I call an "Amazon Junkie". Amazon is my main source for purchasing items I want from the good ole U.S.A. I give you that little background because I have literally purchased thousands of items from Amazon, this is the FIRST item I have ever written a review on. Not only am I writing a review, I feel OBLIGATED to do so...This CD is that good!!!

I will not go into a song by song break down that I have seen in other reviews (great reviews by the way); instead I will tell you what I think may be some other useful information. My main motivation for even looking at this CD was that I grew up a Crue fan and have been a little disappointed lately in what we have been offered. I decided to give this CD a quick listen under the preview section. The songs were definately enough to peak my interest so I made the purchase. This is more than just a CD for the ears; it will have your imagination running wild. I have been listening to this non-stop for the last 9 days and I can tell you it will be quite a while before it is ejected from my car CD player. It is labeled as a "Soundtrack" and it is just that...It is a soundtrack from the book, but if you really listen to the music you will find yourself swept away on a journey of Nikki's life for the rough year he was addicted to drugs. I can literally see this becoming a monster play or a movie similar to (but better than) The Wall or Tommy, The Rock Opera. Yes, I put this CD up against legends like Pink Floyd and The Who.

Is this CD for everyone; not sure, but I sure as heck love it. I listen mostly to Rock/Metal/Alternative; the sounds I am currently digging are: Breaking Benjamin, Seether, Disturbed, Godsmack, Strata, Saliva, Shinedown etc.... If you dig those types of tunes; I promise you will enjoy this CD....Enjoy.

Free Music Review: Nikki Sixx bares his soul, and touches mine in the process
Hit: 5 Stars

I'll begin with an admission that I was looking forward to the book for which this CD serves as the soundtrack, more than this CD. Nikki's previous "solo" excursions haven't impressed me all that much. I've always considered Nikki Sixx to be a "borderline lyrical genius". Problem was he was always writing lyrics about "nothing". He was shackled by the hair/glam metal boundaries of Motley Crue. This release Changes EVERYTHING !!!!
After hearing this CD, I'd prefer Sixx to concentrate on a solo career and leave little girl voiced Vince Neil behind. This is an amazing recording. The lyrics, orchestration, vocals, the musical performances- everything is top notch. This recording drips emotion and passion!!
Along with the incredible arrangements, every song has a hook which will have you singing along by the 2nd time you've played it. For me, the songs are playing over and over in my head already- and I LOVE IT!
I love hard rock/heavy metal. What makes it even better for me is when the lyrics tell a story-so naturally I am a big fan of concept albums.
This one ranks right up there with the greatest I have ever heard.
Queensryche's OPERATION MINDCRIME and PROMISED LAND come to mind as do W.A.S.P.'s THE CRIMSON IDOL and THE NEON GOD, parts 1 and 2 as well as Steve Vai's SEX AND RELIGION.
If you like your music well crafted and beautifully performed this CD is for you. Don't expect Dr. Feelgood, but simply open your ears and your mind, and let Nikki take you on an incredible musical and personal journey. I cannot express how grateful I am that Heroin never took Nikki's life. If it had, I would have suffered by never having heard this CD...
This recording is, in every sense of the word, a MASTERPIECE !!
Thank you Nikki Sixx for an awesome CD !!!!!
