Free Music Notes for High FidelityFree Music Review: You Knew It Had To Be Great, And It Is... Hit: 4 StarsIf there was ever a movie that HAD to have a good soundtrack, this is it. In fact, I think the other reviewer's idea is fantastic--it would be great if the producers would release one of those "More Music From..." deals to showcase even more of the music from HF. I personally wouldn't mind having Lisa Bonet's version of "Baby I Love Your Way" and I can't believe I would want ANYONE's version of that song... Back to the matter at hand. I would guess that most of the people who were attracted to this movie already have a lot of this music in their collection. I had about half of it, and what this soundtrack did for me was point out a lot of great songs that sent me back to the original albums-- back to the Velvet Underground's Loaded, back to Bob Dylan's Oh Mercy, back to everything I have from the Thirteenth Floor Elevators. And a lot of the music I didn't have was pretty eye-opening, too-- The Beta Band, Love and Stevie Wonder, especially. That's what this soundtrack is about-- loving good music, no matter what era it's from. A few of the reviewers complained about the inclusion of two Velvet Underground songs. Personally, I thought it was genius-- True collectors would know that the Velvet Underground released Who Loves The Sun and Oh! Sweet Nuthin' on the same single... I don't know if that's what the producers had in mind but I'm guessing one of them knew that. I thought it was a nice touch. The only thing that keeps this from a 5 star rating is Jack Black's rendition of Let's Get It On. Now I love Jack and I'm a big Tenacious D fan, but the version on the CD seems to lack the passion of the one in the movie. Maybe it was the context of the song, but it seems flatter here than it was on screen. Still, fantastic soundtrack from a truly great movie. A must for music lovers everywhere.
Free Music Review: Incomprehensive but an undeniably great collection of tunes Hit: 5 StarsSo many people have complained that this soundtrack isn't comprehensive, and I'm starting to get tired of it. Considering the overwhelming volume of incredible music in the movie it would be nearly impossible to accomodate everyone's desires and tastes on one album. When you analyze the difficulty of the task they were posed with, it's clear that the album producers did an excellent job of track selection(with the possible exception of "Inside Game" by Royal Trux).Highlights include the exceptional "I'm Wrong About Everything", "I Believe", "Oh Sweet Nuthin", and Jack Black's astounding rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On"
Free Music Review: A terrific collection of music Hit: 5 StarsThis disc contains many good tracks from numerous obscure and largely unknown artists. In fact, I'm so pleased that John included "Always See Your Face" on this CD. LOVE was an astounding band. And Arthur Lee is still alive, but he's in *jail* on a stupid charge.
Free Music Review: The Soundtrack to Life Hit: 5 StarsThis is a fabulous soundtrack, and a perfect companion to a brilliant book. John Cusack and the other producers picked a LOT of good songs for his movie...I would really like to see THEIR collection of albums in addition to the the ones of the characters in the movie. I'm only going to cross my fingers and wait for Volume 2 of this soundtrack, just like Cusack did for Grosse Point Blank. The absolutely best thing about this album is how much you discover. I was familiar with about half of the bands, and I had only heard about 2 of the songs before seeing the movie. Now I have about 14 new songs which I absolutely love...enough to go out and BUY the albums of the bands that I've been introduced to. Does anybody know when Jack Black's solo album will be released? I've gotta get some Sonic Death Monkey. A great soundtrack...all of the most important and best songs from the movie are here. The variety of songs is so wide that they really only have one thing in common...all of them are just great songs. Thanks to the HF producers for introducing me to The Beta Band, the 13th Floor Elevators and Love. Thanks to the HF producers for putting some of Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder's best songs together onto a disc. And thanks to the HF producers for such a good movie and understanding the importance of music in people's lives.
Free Music Review: Great Book, Movie, and Soundtrack Hit: 4 StarsGreat compliment to this movie. I will always be reminded of the way I felt leaving the theatre when I hear "I Believe". Dylan's "Most of the Time" is the topper. All white, male, 35, and alive (and heartbroken) will love this one.Throw in the Clash and get 5 stars.
