Free Music Review: Beyond disappointing

I grew up on this music in the 80's, and was very excited to learn about this compilation. Which only made the musical mediocrity on the disc that much more disappointing.
This CD contains 3 kinds of 80's covers. First there are covers like "Somebody's Baby" and "American Girl" -- which sound like good bar band covers. They strive really hard to sound just like the original recordings, to which I ask, "What's the point?" If I wanted the original sound, I'd listen to the original version. A good cover of song requires the musician to come up with their own interpretation of the music. Merely trying to copy the original has a tendency to fail, like they do on this disc. Not that those songs are badly done, it's just that they sound so similar to the original song but aren't quite as good that I don't see the point in bothering with the watered down versions.
The next type of covers on this CD are songs that try really hard to sound like the original and fail miserably. I have yet to be able to make it through the cover of 'Weird Science' for instance. And there are plenty of other just plain bad covers to keep it company here.
And lastly is the occasional gem, an extreme rairity on this disc. Now and then one of the bands has figured out a way to record a classic song with their own unique flavor on it, and those are great moments. Just don't expect very many of them here.
If you want nostalgia, buy a genuine 80's compilation disc. This here is just a watered down substitute for the real thing. Like store brand cola.
