Free Music Review: The All-Male Quartet - A Staple Of The Early 1950s
Hit: 5 Stars

Back in the pre-R&R early part of the decade of the 1950s most of the major labels had, among their stable of vocalists, an all-male group, led by the likes of The Four Aces and The Mills Brothers at Decca (and The Ames Brothers at their Coral subsidiary), The Four Lads at Columbia (and The Four Coins on their Epic subsidiary), The Crew Cuts at Mercury (who also had a pretty good trio called The Gaylords and another quartet called The Diamonds), and The Four Freshmen, Four Knights, Four Preps and Five Keys at Capitol.

Only RCA Victor never seemed to embrace the idea to quite the same degree among the majors, although they did have a group called The Three Chuckles, which included Teddy Randazzo and who had 3 hits for their "X" subsidiary, another calling themselves The Four Lovers who had one 1956 hit on RCA Victor before going on to greater fame elsewhere as The 4 Seasons, and The Ames Brothers who joined them in 1953 after a long run with Decca/Coral.

But where the many small independent labels popping up were concerned, the fledgling Dot Records tuned to a foursome which had formed up at Western Kentucky College in Bowling Green, and who named themselves after the school nickname, The Hilltoppers. The lead was Jimmy Sacca, along with Don McGuire, Seymour Spiegelman, and one Billy Vaughn, who would later lead a very successful orchestra at Dot and also take over as their musical director.

And, from 1952 on into the first years of the R&R era, they would match their counterparts at the major labels, chalking up 28 hit singles and also doing well in album sales. Here you get 17 of them along with one B-side, and with excellent sound reproduction. In the insert are six pages of liner notes written by author Bobbie Ann Mason, along with a few more vintage photos of the group and a concert poster reproduction. A discography of the contents is on the reverse although, as with the Gale Storm release, the coloring makes it very difficult to read.

In 1955, the year Vaughn took over as musical director at Dot, he was replaced by Chuck Schrouder who would continue with the quartet until their final hit in 1957 - The Joker (That's What They Call Me). It was also from 1955 on that, with the exception of one release, the billing changed to The Hilltoppers Featuring Jimmy Sacca.

The only significant hit missing from this compilation (and which, in retrospect, would have been a better choice than D-A-R-L-I-N' - the flip of If I Didn't Care in 1954), is Ka-Ding-Dong, a # 38 Billboard Pop Top 100 in the fall of 1956 billed to The Hilltoppers Featuring Chuck Schrouder.
