Free Music Review: Raw tracks from the pre-GNR lineup

Before Guns n' Roses came along and forever altered the Hollywood rock scene in the second half of the 1980's, frontman Axl Rose was partnered with future L.A. Guns guitarist Tracii Guns in a band called Hollywood Rose. The alliance was short lived, but it did result in some previously unreleased demo recordings that are now available as Hollywood Rose: The Roots of Guns n' Roses.
These five songs are very raw, but they do give you an idea of how the early GNR sound developed. Only two of the five songs ever made it to a GNR release. A much-improved version of Anything Goes was included on Appetite for Destruction, and a live version of Reckless Life was featured on Gn'r Lies. All five songs are interesting, but they're honestly not that good. Hearing Axl's uneven performance on these tracks, you quickly come to understand why he tried to prevent their release.
The disc is padded with not one but two unnecessary sets of remixes of the songs. The first is by later GNR member Gilby Clarke and the second is by Fred Coury. I mean, what the heck does Cinderella's drummer have to do with Guns n' Roses? I'll grant that the sound quality is better on both sets of remixes, but I just don't see how they are relevant or necessary.
I wouldn't call this demo collection a "must have" for anyone but the very dedicated Guns n' Roses fan. For casual fans, The Roots of Guns n' Roses is mostly going to serve as a curiosity piece, and not one you'll really need to hear more than once. I'm glad the recordings have seen the light of day, but Deadline/Cleopatra is vastly overstating (and overcapitalizing) their significance.
