Free Music Review: Buy it...if for nothing else but the CSO brass section

Let me start off by saying that, if there is one statement that can basically sum up this entire recording, it is this: thank God for CSO brass. If you are not a big fan of the wall of sound that is the CSO low brass section, you might want to click away right now.
If there is one thing this recording does best, it is showcasing that which made the Chicago Symphony brass section so famous in the first place. My favorite example would be the "midway" point of Saturn (starting 4 after III if you've got your score in front of you). There has never been a better example of what I like to refer to as "musical flatulence" put to tape. The dynamic is marked fortissimo and triple forte and, trust me, the section delivers.
Let me say that OVERALL, besides for the brass, this is a great recording in general. I've always thought of this recording as being sort of a "hi-fi" sound, which I personally enjoy (being a young classical music listener who doesn't remember the days of vinyl). What you may notice is that it is significantly louder than most classical recordings and there are even a few points of "digital distortion" (where the recording "clips" because of the overwhelming volume [in Mars, leading up into II and leading up into XII if you've got your score]). I will warn you that if you're switching from Mozart chamber works to this, you may want to turn the volume down a little bit...a lot, actually.
I can't remark too much on how this compares to other recordings seeing as this is only one of two recordings I have of The Planets. What I can say is that nothing Levine does seems to be out of place or out of character for the piece. The orchestra is loud and bombastic when it needs to be (Mars) and softens up just as well during the more serene moments.
Overall, a great recording and a great add to any collection. Oh, and, if you love trombones, you'll love this.
