Free Music Review: Mid-`80s schlock with just two worthy songs

Take away the first two songs from this album and you're left with a total cliched dud. "Bad Attitude" and "Feel it Again" are genuinely cool songs that provide a promising start to "The Big Prize," but unfortunately the good times don't last. The lead-off tune, "Bad Attitude," boasts a little bounce and some classic `80s heavy-metal edge, while "Feel it Again" is amazing from start to finish: subtle intro; meaningful, heartfelt lyrics; a big-time catchy chorus; and a great bridge in the middle portion. Simply put, "The Big Prize" would be a five-star CD if all the tunes were like "Feel it Again."
Written in 1985, a time in rock `n' roll history when `80s metal was skyrocketing to its apex, these tunes are structured around Karate Kid synth-driven drivel, hokey lyrics that come off as falsely weighty, predictably larger-than-life choruses and a surprising lack of melody, which, love `em or hate `em, most `80s metal bands offered in spades. Songs such as "What Does it Take," "Once the Feeling" and "Take My Hand" might sound acceptable while played during high school prom dances in `80s movies, but heard in this day and age they're fairly embarrassing. "One by One" is a poor, poor man's Bon Jovi, complete with a "Runaway"-like keyboard intro, while the overly dramatic "Wounded" contains sonic elements of Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name," which would be released a year later (1986).
Sure, Honeymoon Suite came out swinging in the mid-'80s with all the flashy components a heavy metal band was supposed to have, but unfortunately these guys forgot to include memorable hooks on most of this average-sounding record. Save for the first two songs, the only other spark of creativity on "The Big Prize" occurs on "All Along You Knew," which features outstanding flute work by guest artist Ian Anderson.
Overall, I wouldn't even purchase this CD used; just download "Feel it Again" on i-Tunes.
