Free Music Notes for Every Man for HimselfFree Music Review: stepped off the road with "the reason," tore the road to shreds with EMFH Hit: 5 Stars
i think in the time that ive had this cd i have listened to it in upwards of 200 times. im not even kidding either. maybe more. i can confidently say that of all the cds i own this is by far my favorite. not the best, mind you, but def my favorite. i still think the metallica album master of puppets is impossible to top but thats just me. so why is this my favorite? maybe its because of the work put into it, maybe its the change of pace they showed, maybe its the incredibly improved lyrics (when the lyrics before were still pretty damn good). i cant put a finger on it but this album is so amazingly good and im not just saying that cause im a fan. im an enormous fan of dave matthews band and ive hated the last 2 or 3 albums theyve put out. same goes with metallica. so i listen to the music without thinking of who is singing. and even with that this album stands out over all others in my mind as my favorite.
from the moment i started playing the rules and i heard the drill seargeant yelling i was hooked. when it leads into born to lead i got goosebumps. ive heard that song a million times and it never gave me goosebumps until then because i realized i was finally listening to the real thing. so how is it song by song? i shall tell you...
the rules - nothing much here just the drill seargeant yelling and it sets up the mood of the album and more or less mocks people for their inability to think for themselves. corny "sir, yes sir!" but hey who cares its an intro track.
born to lead - we have all heard this song plenty of times by now and seen the video im sure. i still think its a great song with a great driving rock beat to it. best part of the song is the breakdown in the middle with the air raid sirens and more yelling from our beloved sergeant. this could be a moderately successful radio song in my opinion. 9/10
moving forward - ok i must admit i didnt think much of this song from the first minute or so. the queen style beginning and very slow first verse dont leave a lasting impression. in fact, i dont get much of anything until the naaaa na na na naaaaaa in the middle which skyrockets this song into greatness. they said they "borrowed" the na nas from journey but i dont care it makes the song 100 times better as well as the ending. great track. 8.5/10
inside of you - we have all heard this one as well and its one of my favorites. the not so subtle sexual lyrics may bug some people but not me. bonus points for the whooo!! in the middle of the song. this should do well on the radios its got that hit song sound to it. 9/10
the first of me - ok so every album has a song like this. a song that transcends over mind and body and every other song on the album. running away was for the s/t. disappear was for the reason. the first of me is for EMFH. this song is so incredibly amazing its impossible to not put it on repeat. its the one song where doug really really uses his voice and you can see his range. lyrics are top notch about not letting people influence you for the wrong reasons. i love this song so much and yet im not sure if radios would play it much cause it isnt catchy enough (i know its a bitch). but this is def the best song on here. 11/10
good enough - this is a good song but its not one of my favorites. a little too angsty for me but it still has a powerful chorus. the church organ in the beginning kinda bugs me but the song is still very listenable. 7.5/10
if i were you - obviously everyone has heard this song. i still think its a great song despite its lack of radio play (that isnt always the measure of a good song anyway). knowing the inspiration behind this song and all of the emotion put into it makes this song even better. good use of strings and the toy piano kinda adds the mocking quality of the immature people this song is about. 9/10
without a fight - great great rock song!! sounds a lot like greenday in the beginning with the drums and its kinda punky but its got a great driving rhythm and i absolutely love the part with "we must pick up the pace." heard this live in atlanta and it was a great live song too. should be a classic hoob rock song before its all said and done. 9.5/10
dont tell me - yet another classic song. the hands down best moment on the album is the unexpected scream after the first verse. i cant wait to hear this one live cause im sure doug will be playing guitar as well since dan has a solo in the middle (a solid solo by the way). great lyrics and great meaning to the song. actions speak louder than words. this is third best song on the album. 10/10
look where we are - ok this is probably my least favorite song on the album. however i do love the guitar riff at the beginning and throughout the song. very funky and its a classic one from dan. but the song just comes off as a bit cheesy with the whole "we made it even though times were tough." i still like to listen to the song because of the guitar but it doesnt stand out in my mind that much. bonus points for the guitar riff and the ending. 7/10
say the same - ive heard recently that this song is about markku and now that i think about that it makes sense. very good lyrics about not regretting your past which is another theme of EMFH. i like the "all im telling you" section. even though it starts off slow it ends up being a powerful medium paced rock song. this could be pretty good live as well. 8.5/10
if only - heres your #1 hit for EMFH. this song has all the makings of an enormous radio blow up hit if, and thats a big if, they release it. i think hoob would be making a big mistake if they didnt release this song. it has the meaningful romantic lyrics, the regretful hurt i wish i could get you back lyrics, a nice string arrangement in the background, beautiful acoustic guitar with a short solo in the middle, soaring doug robb vocals, and its not too long at 3 1/2 minutes. my only problem would be if it got as big as the reason then their credibility would take another hit since it would be another slower love song they were famous for. i dont care though its a great great song. the second best song on the album. 10/10
more than a memory - i knew beforehand that EMFH would have songs on it that we wouldnt recognize. songs that we have never heard from hoobastank and that would make you scratch your head and say "thats hoobastank?" heres a song just like that. featuring an accordian, a trumpet, a jazz flute (and no thats not ron burgundy), this song is beautiful in every sense of the word. its not too powerful so it wont leave a real lasting impression on you but it makes you think of a person you love while listening to it. some people might say its too long at over 7 minutes but i think the song flows rather well and there isnt much dead time during the song. great album ender if you dont count the bonus tracks. 9/10
BONUS TRACKS:
finally awake - for the life of me i cant figure out why they didnt put this on the album and left it as a bonus track. this is such a good rocking song and i think it deserves better than bonus track status. if anything i think look where we are should be replace by this song on the album. great drum intro at the beginning and a great breakdown in the middle that struck me as somewhat similar to remember me or give it back from the s/t. i really like this song and im glad i have it. 9/10
waiting - apparently they played this live over the summer and it came as a surprise to most that it wasnt included on the album, but i can see why it wasnt. nothing too special here. i still think its a good song just like the others but its nothing too overpowering and it wont stand out in your mind after listening to it. bonus points for the sound of chris dropping his drumsticks at the end and the scraping noise at the beginning. 8/10
overall this easily is hoobastanks best work. i know a lotta people like the s/t and the reason but in my opinion they werent diverse enough and this is where EMFH passes them up big time. personally i cant wait to hear some of these songs live this summer. thanks for reading this it took forever to type :)
