Free Music Notes for Hoot: Original Motion Picture SoundtrackFree Music Review: A very sunny listen... Hit: 4 Stars
for the summer of 2006, courtesy of Jimmy Buffett, the Coral Reefer Band, and some young and old friends. First of all, about half of the CD is made up of Jimmy Buffett tracks (one new composition). "Wondering Where The Lions Are" is a Bruce Cockburn tune that shines under the interpretation by Buffett and the Coral Reefer band, "Barefootin'" is a great duet with Alan Jackson in the spirit of the "License to Chill album", "Floridays" is a cover of...Jimmy Buffett, previously done as an acoustic, wistful tune and now happy, sunny, reggae-filled, and driven by steel drums, and featuring Fingers Taylor on harmonica. "Werewolves of London" is the dud here, and Buffett should never have tried this, as it comes off as bad karaoke.
G. Love does his Philly-driven soul on a track, Toots and the Maytals show up, and one of the stars of the movie (Brie Larson) does here Disney/Nickolodeon teen-pop, and it's not unbearable. But the gem, indeed the true shining moment of the CD is the chamber music, down-beat interpretation of Bill Withers' "Lovely Day" done by Maroon 5. Worth the price of the CD by itself. It takes the Withers song, strips it down, and slows the beat till it is almost reminiscent of the Beach Boys "Warmth of the Sun."
This one will be played on backyard decks across America all through the summer of 2006.
Free Music Review: nice soundtrack Hit: 4 Stars
I'm not usually too interested in soundtracks, but I was in the store today and this one was playing on the overhead. When i heard the wonderful rendition of Bruce Cockburn's Wondering Where the Lions Are I had to have it. As the day has gone on the soundtrack as a whole has proved to be a great buy.
The Maroon 5/Bill Withers cover of Lovely Day is grand, and Floridays is an improvement on the original. Brie Larson's Coming Around is a nice bit of pop and Toots and the Maytals Funky Kingston is infectious. Barefootin' (with Alan Jackson) continues the collaboration begun on License to Chill to good effect. The only clunker is Buffett's version of Werewolves of London-a horrible mistake to record this one, it only takes away from the original.
Reviewing a Jimmy Buffett cd is always an adventure. Parrotheads are already sold and a certain segment of the market automatically discounts his work. This is a fun, enjoyable cd. I could recommend the cd just for Wondering Where the Lions Are and Funky Kingston, but the rest of the tracks make it a very good value
Free Music Review: Kids movie, Adult's soundtrack Hit: 4 Stars
Who would have expected the soundtrack for a kids movie to be this good? I originally purchased it for Maroon 5/Bill Withers version of "Lovely Day" and Jimmy Buffett's Floridays, but have really enjoyed the different types of music that music supervisor Savannah Jane Buffett has put together. Parrott Heads have plenty to enjoy on this disc too, with "Wondering Where The Lions Are", "Good Guys Win", "Barefootin'" (with Alan Jackson) and Jimmy's cover of the Warren Zevon classic "Werewolves Of London". There is plenty for the non-Parrot Heads to love as well. The cuts by G.Love and Toots & The Maytals are fun summertime music that just get stuck in your head. Even the score, "Happy Ending", is bright and sunny. This CD hasn't left my car since it arrived.
Free Music Review: I'm a parrothead, so it appeals to me. Hit: 4 Stars
There are a few hit and misses on this album, but overall it fits the mood. I don't care for Buffett's cover of "Werewolves of London", however, his re-recording of "Floridays" may not be as good as the original 1986 title-track, but it's nice to hear an upbeat version of it and more importantly Greg "Fingers" Taylor is back jamming with Jimmy on that track. I haven't actually seen the film HOOT so I can't say how it fits the mood of the film, but I think most parrothead will like the Jimmy songs and IMHO some of the non-Jimmy songs are worth a listen too!
Free Music Review: Margaritas, sunshine and owls Hit: 4 Stars
Very nice soundtrack, featuring some excellent covers and several originals. Jimmy's new song "Good Guys Win" is destined for the Billboard Charts. As usual the Coral Reefer Band is in fine form here and Fingers Taylor even re-emerges on a couple of songs. (Although CA harmonica ace Tom Ball also kicks butt on "Happy Ending.") Sonny Landreth plays a mean slide. Good music for driving, boating, BBQing and/or just hanging. Now pardon me while I pour myself a tall, cold one.
