Free Music Notes for Looking for LuckyFree Music Review: Hootie's best since Cracked Rear View! Hit: 5 Stars
I went to Hootie and the Blowfish's concert in Knoxville, TN on August 4, 2005. Hootie and the Blowfish put on a fantastic show, so I was sure I would buy their new album, "Looking for Lucky" when it came out. Well it's in my cd player, and it's gonna be staying there for a very long time.
1."State your Peace"
A very strong song, great lyrics. A great way to open the album. (8/10)
2. "Hey Sister Pretty"
Great, great song. Very cathcy chorus. One of my favorite songs from the album. A very radio-friendly song. (9/10)
3. "The Killing Stone"
A slower, more intense song. Strong lyrics and meaning. (7.5/10)
4. "Get Out of My Mind"
Very radio-friendly song as well. Reminds me of "Only Wanna Be With You" (8.5/10)
5. "Another Year's Gone By"
Not as catchy as other songs on this album, but compared to other songs I hear on the radio, its still very good. (6.5/10)
6. "Can I See You"
Slower song, Darius sings with real emotion. This song gives me chill bumps when I listen to it. (8/10)
7. "A Smile"
A poppy song that reminds me of earlier Hootie songs, not one of my favorites though. (6/10)
8. "One Love"
Get ready to have this song playing in your head for a long time. This IS Hootie's best song in a long long time! (10/10)
9. "Leaving"
A bluegrass-esque song that is very catchy. This is a really great song that could easily find itself on Country radio stations. Shows the band's versatility. (10/10)
10. "Autumn Jones"
A slower song that has a great chorus. Radio-friendly as well. One of the strongest songs on the album. (9.5/10)
11."Free to Everyone"
Solid song as well, a very feel-good tune. (7.5/10)
12. "Waltz to Me"
A bluegrass-esque song. An absolute gem. This song wont get attention from radio stations, but If you listen to it one, you will understand how good of a song it is. (10/10)

Darius Rucker shines in this album. He has one of the most unique voices in music, and possibly one of the best voices in a long time. The Band shows it's musical talents in this album. This is definitly an album that you turn on and just let it run all the way through. I hope that this album does well, because it is a fantastic album by a fantastically talented band. Hootie and the Blowfish are back, but it's not that they have ever really been gone, its the fact that the music industry has been infatuated with talentless pop starts for about 10 years now. Dont let yourself be sucked into meaningless, talentless manufactured music. Your heart and soul wants to hear great music, so let it. Go and purchase "Looking For Lucky", you will be very happy that you did.
Free Music Review: Music Lover Forever Hit: 5 Stars
DOING THE HAPPY DANCE!!! YaY! Hootie is back. So I get online and come to see what people are saying about this CD and I come across the person who lacks taste and says "hootie's back. no one cares". Ok, first of all, I do. Secondly, millions do.
These guys write amazing music and hey, who cares if they sing about hamburgers, chicken or freakin underwear for that matter? ( I mean honestly, like if the person who gave that rating was offered umpteen hundreds of dollars to sing a stupid ditty and it was going to take up maybe a half a day of his time.... like they wouldn't do it? Come on!!!!! My belief is that most of the guys have started families, and being on the road touring isn't their priority. Isn't that how it should be? Family first? I just get so annoyed at people making the "sell outs" comment when if the tables were turned, they themselves would take the money and run). That being said, the lyrics, the harmonies, the music...... yes, my boys are back (my children refer to this band as Mom's Boys.... or.... Hootie and his Goldfishies) and playing some amazing, thought provoking music. While one may find "the killing stone", weak, I find it DEAD ON. Too many people tryin to tell us how to live our lives and how we should vote and blah blah blah. Ok, wake up people, those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. And to a certain degree, we all live in a glass houses.
One Love... did Bob Marley influence us all? This is really a tribute to a genius we lost way to young.
Waltz Into Me- a favorite of mine. Sweet and simple.
Get Out Of My Head- awesome. Can't sit still song.
Another Years Gone By-what more can you say about 9/11? I think most of us feel the way this song states.
I'm not going to even continue because I have something great to say about each song... well...maybe "a smile", I seem to skip that one a lot.
I pre ordered my CD after seeing them live here locally at the fair. They played a lot off the (at the time) soon to be released CD and I was in loooooooove. Well, with it came "B Sides". Great stuff there too. "Ride Along".... poor J. Lo. This song is about her and her .... well, shall we say dysfunction when it comes to relationships. HYSTERICAL. Find it. DOWNLOAD IT.
Anyway, this is a great CD and one the guys should be so proud of. Glad they are back.
Free Music Review: Cracked Rear View Part II Hit: 5 Stars
A new album by Hootie and the Blowfish and still sounding as natural as ever whilst remaining too under rated. Easily compared to their 16 million selling Cracked Rear View this could easily be the sequel or part 2 of that era. What a stunning return to form. The new track on the best of offering did have some of us worried but Darius is belting out vocals as if Angels are singing complimented by his band and the drummer that doesn't miss a meat Jim Soni-Sonfield. They present on this offering 12 refreshing pop tracks that are insightful borrowing from a wide array of genres, country to blues. This certainly will give you more depth in listening than Sheryl Crow's recent mundane offering "wildflower" where nothing on that disc is wild but just slow that you will go to sleep and not remember the CD when you wake up. In the track "smile" we hear Rucker singing higher notes. Other highlights fans will love are "get out of my mind", "another year's gone by", "one love", "leaving", "Autumn Jones", and "free to everyone" all worthy of being singles even the slightly cheesier "hey sister pretty."
This should get album of the year but seeing as the music is really good the marketing masses will again ignore the talent of Hootie and the Blowfish but thankfully for the fans they refuse to go away and keep making music for the people they deem to be the real deal and that is their fans.
Thanks Hootie very much for keeping it real.
I think Fans of Hootie and the Blowfish would really enjoy the following albums:
*The Wallflowers: Rebel Sweetheart
*Dave Matthews Band: Stand Up
*Better Than Ezra's: Before The Robots
Welcome Back Hootie and what a fine return to form with modernizatoin and polished studio recordings.
Free Music Review: Hootie is back... but for the true fans they never left Hit: 5 Stars
Hootie's latest work is, as always, amazing. Darius' voice is rich and soothing, the perfect compliment to Marks mellow guitar, nothing new. Dean and Soni play off of each other nicely. This record encompases more of a "Cracked Rear View" feel than the others, however distinguishes itself nicely with a subtle nuance of counrty. As the last album, self-titled, was blended with more of an R&B feel, Lucky is fused with more of a counrty feel. No not "yee haw" redneck country, a perfect example is the cajun feel that John Mellencamp has blended into his sound by means of violin and acordian. This only reiterates the fact that Hootie & the Blowfish are under rated song writers and substancially well versed musicians. It is no small feat for a band have such a diverse body of music. Only a select handful of bands are capable of doing this. For instance, The Black Crowes and The Rolling Stones are two other bands that seemlessly blend all genres into a symphonic form of rock. Like a fine wine, it is the small nuances that bands like Hootie and The Stones add that make the hair stand up on your arm. Don't listen to the poor reviews, those people are ignorant pop hound-poseurs who are only interested in the hot acts of the minute. It is because Hootie is so much more than just a record selling phenom that Looking For Lucky is what it is. Superb musicianship and songwriting that comes from the soul makes this a solid work that creates a warm mood and pleasant imagery, please indulge.
Free Music Review: Hootie's Best Since "Cracked" Hit: 5 Stars
When you put out a debut album as stellar as "Cracked," such an act is almost impossible to follow. And since then, Hootie has not been able to do it, and as a result their 15 minutes of fame ended rather quickly.
Looking for Lucky isn't quite as good as Cracked, but it's close. The songs are catchy, the guitars still rock, and Darius Rucker's voice is as good as ever. Only thing I don't like about the album: too political. I like music, I like politics, but I don't think the two mix well.
My take on the songs:
State Your Peace - great first track, gets you into the album 9/10
Hey Sister Pretty- another catchy Hootie tune; a little cheesy
8/10
Killing Stone - very political, weak song, musically & lyrically
5/10
Get Out of My Mind - quintessential Hootie song; great stuff
10/10
Another Year's Gone By- my favorite tune on the album; so good
10/10
Can I see You - a little bit of a country/pop sound here; fun song 9/10
A Smile- typical silly Hootie song, but still a catchy tune
8/10
One Love - great first single; shades of "Hold My Hand"
10/10
Leaving- Hootie does country, and does a kickbutt job
10/10
Autumn Jones- good slow song, Darius's vocals shine here
9/10
Free to Everyone - underrated tune, another fun, catchy listen
10/10
Waltz into Me - not too great; takes a while to grow on you
7/10
