Free Music Notes for Looking for LuckyFree Music Review: State Your Peace Hit: 3 Stars
Back in 94, I was watching Letterman, which I did obsessively back then, and caught a brand new band perform one of the most refreshing song I've heard for the longest time. The next day, I strolled down to the local Borders and picked up Hootie and the Blowfish's Cracked Rear View. For me, it the best pop album ever made, any song on it could have been a hit. From there, I religiously drank the Hootie kool-aid, buying up shirts, hats, towels and playing the album for anyone who would listen. Months later, as everyone knows the story by now, they exploded with Hold My Hand, Let Her Cry, and Only Wanna Be with You getting played on the radio about once every half an hour. I had one buddy of mine told me he knew Hootie was over exposed the moment his sister bought their CD.
With Fairweather Johnson, the band expanded their horizon taking more chances. Same goes for Musical Chairs although there were some missteps on that album. By the time their self titled album came around, it seem they had fallen into a rut. None of the songs really stood out or compared with earlier triumphs. Darius Rucker did bounce back on his solo album, Back to Then, so I did have hope going their latest album.
But the boys settled back into their self-titled rut with the release of Looking for Lucky as there are not many stand out tracks that are on par with their earlier work or even Darius' solo project. Leaving comes close with its bluegrass influence and harmonies by a female vocalist. And the closer, Waltz into Me feature a mandolin set to, obviously, a waltz. Get Out of My Mind is the best "pop" song on the album. But the other songs just seem to run into each other and before you notice, the album is done.
Hootie has become more overtly political on this album. Granted that have touch on issues such as racism in the past, but they were at times subversive. The opener, State Your Peace, is an ode to our first amendment rights. But a couple songs later, they also encourage people to make sure they watch what they say with The Killing Stone. Another Year's Gone By, which has a great guitar hook, is about dealing with the effect that 9/11 had on our society years after the fact. Looking for Lucky, as a whole, is better than the self titled album, but I'm still waiting for something as good as the albums they made during the 90's.
Free Music Review: Subpar Hit: 3 Stars
I'm always reluctant to lambaste an album the day it debuts; however, this album is not without its criticism. "Autumn Jones" and "One Love" are by far the two strongest songs on the entire album. I almost get the feeling that the band's heart and soul stopped being put into their music, oh let's say, three albums ago. I understand that it must be difficult to match the success of Cracked Rear View (which I didn't take out of my car for two years), but I as a fan am starved for a HBF that will capture the emotion like Cracked Rear View. I enjoyed Muscial Chairs from start to finish, but the band has yet to capture even the third albums charm and sincerity. I never want this band to stop producing music, but I want it to produce music that comes more from the heart and less from the head. I believe people fell in love with this band because they captured the human condition in catchy ballads like "Hold My Hand" and "Let Her Cry." What red- blooded American couldn't relate to these lyrics? Who knows, maybe it was just the place I was in, but I will never, ever give up on this group. To all HBF fans, buy this album and enjoy. It's not awful, it's just not great.
Free Music Review: good stuff Hit: 3 Stars
Hootie still has it, despite the Burger King commercial. Those looking for the band to release Cracked Rear View Part 2 won't find it here, but there are some great songs to be heard. I've noticed that on the last few albums there is a mixed bag of songs in terms of style and quality. These guys incorporate country, bluegrass, rock, pop, etc etc and for the most part it works. Keep in mind that most of the Cracked Rear View songs were several years old even when that album hit the "big time", so it is only natural for Hootie to move on to other material. Me personally, I don't think I ever want to hear "hold my hand" again, but on the flipside could listen to the hidden track "closetful of fear" off Musical Chairs over and over.
Anyway, if you liked Hootie back in the day I think you'll dig a lot of the songs on Lucky.
Free Music Review: It's decent, but too homogenized Hit: 2 Stars
Like much of mainstream American music, Hootie & The Blowfish have found their groove and settled in a little too well. The songs all sound nice, but each bleeds into the next much too easily. I would mention standout tracks to try, but when songs barely deviate from their comfortable formula of an easy tempo and the same damn three chords... Close your eyes, point, and try a sample song. If you like the thought of 12 tracks of it, you'll be quite pleased with Looking For Lucky. As for myself, I think I'll look elsewhere.
Free Music Review: Muhaha! Hit: 1 Stars
There's nothing fundamentally wrong with college rock, but Hillbillystan college rock with lyrics so idiotic can be downright annoying for anyone concerned.
I will credit them their first album which had equally silly lyrics, but was listenable, at times (with some generocity it could even pick two stars)... but this one is downright laughable.
