Free Music Review: Musical chairs---well worth the wait
Hit: 5 Stars

After a two-year hiatus, Darius Rucker and company have matured, presenting a diverse and introspective new album, from "the times I need to be alone", in "I Will Wait" to the isolation in "Only Lonely On the Inside". Inspired by the most beautiful and isolated places in America, the jagged mountains of Wyoming's Grand Tetons, the band has developed an album as changing as the area's landscape. For those who expect more of the same from "Cracked Rear View", "Answer Man" will suffice; and for those who would expect changes from the decade's most surprising group, look for an Appalachian touch in several of the latter tracks. Let the CD play out after what seems to be the last track for another surprise---a bonus track, which might serve to explain the entire work.

"only Lonely" is a musical gift to anyone who has ever felt love on the rebound, or recalled the meeting of a lost love...its melancholic hopefulness will stir all but the most jaded lover; so multi-faceted is this work. Listen to it once, read your Kahlil Gibran, and listen again.

Musical Chairs has been worth the wait.

Free Music Review: A little bit of everything..What music is all about
Hit: 5 Stars

Pop, folk, country, rock-n-roll, bluegrass, R&B, it's all on Hootie's appropiately titled Musical Chairs. The band blends all of the mentioned artistic styles while staying true to the band's supreme power at vocals and emotional string arrangements. All four members of the band contributing to the songwriting credits, making the album a true ensemble of artitistic genius at work. This is hands-down Hootie's best album, as it shows an evolution in song-writing and arrangement. The rock-pop sound of I Will Wait did earn radio airplay, and the ballad Only Lonely, although written for the movie You Got Mail, eventually appeared on the Message in a Bottle Soundtrack. the country-tinged Las Vegas Nights, is one of the true high points as it stirs yearning and sadness on a steel-guitar charged rythym. The folky Michelle Post and bluegrass styled Desert Mountain Showdown have real sing-along potential, while the R&B laden What's Going On Here once again shows why Darius Rucker is the best front-man vocally in the business. The album does include a hidden track at #15. From tracks 1 thru 15, the album is one of the 90's best.

Free Music Review: Better than Cracked Rear View?
Hit: 5 Stars

I own all three Hootie and the Blowfish albums. I can definitely say this is much better than Fairweather Johnson. But, could it be better than Cracked Rear View? The day I bought Musical Chairs, I played it at least three or four times; I only listened to Cracked Rear View three or four times the first week I got it. On Musical Chairs, I keep playing "Wishing," "I Will Wait," and "Bluesy Revolution" over and over again. I only play "Let Her Cry" like that on Cracked Rear View, and I'd sort of be insane if I did that to a song on Fairweather Johnson. The other songs on Musical Chairs are also great. It has a very wide range, from the edgy sounds of "Wishing" and "Bluesy Revolution" to the country sounds of "Michelle Post" and "Desert Mountain Showdown" to the semi-lounge sound of "What Do You Want From Me Now." It may not get up to 15 million like Cracked Rear View, but this is their best work ever!

Free Music Review: from a South Carolina perspective
Hit: 5 Stars

I read the comments for Hootie's newest with interest, but noticed there was no voice from Darius and Company's own state... I have grown up throughout the '90s listening to these guys, from Five Points in Columbia to the Windjammer in Charleston. The band does not disappoint with "Musical Chairs." They have managed to withstand the sophomore jinx of their second album to create a third that is every bit Hootie and the Blowfish as the guys I saw for the first time years ago in a small club near USC. This cd is a must for those of us who still believe in everything that the band is both on and off the stage. They are to be commended for risking a detour from their "natural sound" and experimenting a little. Keep it up Hootie, and the true fans will continue to recognize your musical genius.

Free Music Review: Awesome, By far the best of all their albums
Hit: 5 Stars

I thought this album was incredible. Within all its wonderful songs, it contains the stories of different people. They are so inspirational, I've always felt better after listening to Hootie and the Blowfish. Their music shows such dedication and hard work, I would like to recomend it to all. Every song has a different air about it, whether it be sad, happy, contemplative, or just plain old listen-to-me style. I totally suggest getting it, listening to it, and watch how great you feel, you just kinda want to get up and dance to certain songs, like they have some sort of feel good, be happy, "Wish" away your fears, cause you are your own "Answer Man" and its never good to be "Only Lonely" halo around them!!!!
