Free Music Review: Flare for Past with a bright Future...
Hit: 5 Stars

Once you here the opening chord of "Fine Line," its more than obvious this is a great classic rock/pop album. Hootie returns to its roots here with a wonderful collection of covers - Rucker, Bryan and company pull it off so well you'd think they were Blowfish originals. This album is the perfect blend of the radio-friendly format of "Cracked Rear View," the dark maturity of "Fairweather Johnson," and the style of 1998's "Musical Chairs." Rucker continues to prove to be one of the greatest rock vocalists to date - a big, gutsy, R&B influenced baritone. Did Don Henley ever sound so sexy? Could Van Morrison pull off Bill Wither's "Use Me?" Highlights include "Let Me Be Your Man" and the previously mentioned "Use Me." Who cares if its not cool to like Hootie - go out to your local record store, buy this record, then take a long road trip with the windows down. And warm up your vocal chords - you'll be singing along to these.

While Hootie may never recieve the commercial success they gained on Cracked Rear View, SSC should give die-hards a great taste of what the band is about, and should give newer fans the indication of how far Hootie has come by the music they have chosen to cover and the unique power still hanging in Rucker's vocal cords. While nothing uniquely "new" is added to this album (a majority of the songs were former B-sides to earlier releases), the put-together of the album does give a nice blend, perfect for long drives on the interstate. The Band however did seem to cut corners by not recording a studio version of I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You, the absolute gem of the 15-track album. And chosing "Use Me", a Bill Wither's tune sung with Edwin McCain, as the band's first single, was a dire mistake. Rucker's voice talents on tracks like Renaissance Eyes, Let Me Be Your Man, and Driver 8, show why he has the best voice of any lead vocalist in any modern band today.

Free Music Review: Scattered, Smothered And Covered - AN INSTANT CLASSIC!
Hit: 5 Stars

Scattered, Smothered And Covered is a Hootie fan's dream come true. Although possibly not as good as Cracked Rear View, this CD is as good if not better than thier previous two (FWJ & MC). "Fine Line" harkens back to the Hootie of old with a bit of a country feel, while "Hey, Hey, What can I do" (a Zepplin cover) is simply awesome. Darius Rucker voice is unbelievable in "Renaissance Eyes" and "Use Me". One minor letdown for me was "Gravity of the Situation", which was much more balanced on "MTV Unplugged". Nanci Griffith's vocals seem to almost drown out Darius' on the studio version. I highly recommend this to any fan of music, period. You will absolutely be blown away!

Free Music Review: The many faces of Hootie
Hit: 5 Stars

Hootie & the Blowfish began as a kick@ss bar cover b and, and that reappears here with some great covers, along with awesome B-Sides. The diversity on this album is amazing. Fine Line is bluesy, I Go Blind explodes with trademark Hootie rock, then Almost Home shows off their more bluegrass side, before a Led Zeppelin cover rocks you, then Darius lets loose with one of most soulful, incredible vocal performances I've ever heard (Renaissance Eyes). And that's just the first five songs, a taste of what this album brings. There's an REM cover, original Hootie stuff, it's all different and it's all great. Forget what you may have heard about this band, if you love MUSIC get this and their other albums and you will not be disappointed

Free Music Review: If it ain't broke...
Hit: 5 Stars

I first saw these guys in college at a fraternity party when they worked for beer. Although they've grown up and found sucess, they have finally come back to what got us all on the band wagon (no pun intended) from the get go. Too bad they didn't include 'Love The One You're With', which any true old school Hootie fan knows was the final encore song back in the day. 'Fine Line' is a great tune that actually got some limited country play but never made it out on anything released by the band. Darius definitely does 'Driver 8' justice with his raspy rendition. Those of you not familiar with the Carolinas and who are also curious about the title. I have two words for you WAFFLE HOUSE !
